Science funding was hit in 2025. What does that mean for the future?

December 23, 20254:27 PM ET, 11-Minute Listen Transcript

2025 was a hard year for science. The Trump administration upended federal funding for all kinds of scientific pursuits, slashing budgets across agencies like NASA, NIH and NOAA. PR’s Rob Stein and Katia Riddle spoke to scientists and officials who worry that those cuts could cause the United States to lose its competitive edge as a global hub for research and innovation, and steer future generations away from careers in science.

  6. Join the #PlanetarySociety! There is a big #TotalEclipse coming up April 8. There won't be another in the USA for 4 decades! The Planetary Society works to support and advocate for science and exploration. They will have great programs around the #eclipse www.planetary.org science.nasa.gov/eclipses/futu

  7. @dragonarchitect not at atmosphere pressure, but I recently learned about crazy stuff in ice giant planets, where it could not only rain diamonds but also a lake of fluid diamonds would be so high density that the rained down diamonds could float like icebergs in it. Absolutely bizarre. It was in a recent episode of #planetarysociety podcast.

  8. For y’all who wanna watch the solar eclipse on the 14th. The Planetary Society has a great collection of resources.

This includes a really slick interactive map created by The Eclipse Company. It’s designed well and functions in a meaningful way.

  10. #PlanetarySociety : #NASA spent $49.9 billion 💰💰💰💰💰 on #SLS and #Orion between 📆 2006 and their first test launch in 2022. Due to “poorly defined requirements, poor contractor performance, and increased material #cost”...

    • SLS cost 42.5% 📈 more 💸 than originally projected
    • Orion cost is 37.4% 📈 higher 💸
    • The EGS program has cost 40% 📈 more 💸 than originally expected

  11. @greengaybles
Sorry if you're being bombarded with suggestions and I'm adding to it but I'd love to shoutout the #PlanetaryRadio #podcast run by the #PlanetarySociety

There's a lot of negativity in news media nowadays so listening to positive science news about space and astronomy gives some hope and happiness.

Searching for planetary radio or the planetary society in most podcast players should give the feed! Cheers

  14. The Planetary Society's #LightSail2 spacecraft reentered the atmosphere ending a nearly 3.5 year mission to demonstrate the viability of using a solar sail

Funded by members of the non-profit and run by the #PlanetarySociety the mission started operations twice as far out as the International Space Station, used the #SolarSail for propulsion and made 8,000 orbits
