25th Anniversary of 9/11
Since today is the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the USA, I am reposting a tribute that I originally posted in 2023. It’s a long read, but it details the events of that day, how they affected me and my family, and all of the emotions I felt that day. Do you remember?
Where were you on September 11, 2001? If you are old enough, I am sure you remember precisely where you were and what you were doing at that exact moment when you realized the USA was under attack!
I was a student-teacher preparing to go to school to teach 5th grade. I always watched The Today Show on NBC while eating breakfast and getting ready for my day. I remember a breaking news bulletin interrupting the regular programming. A plane had crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center! I ran to the TV out of utter disbelief. How could a commercial plane be flying that low? How could the pilot not see the looming towers of the New York skyline coming straight at him? Was it some sort of medical emergency? In the beginning, no one mentioned “terrorist attack.” I continued to watch as reporters showed video of the burning building and first responders rushing to help those trapped in the tower. Then, I saw the second plane crash into the south tower…LIVE on the news! I screamed in disbelief as I called out to my husband. One plane crash was random and tragic, but TWO?! That is the moment I started to freak out. I remember asking my husband, “What is happening?!” I felt like I was in an episode of The Twilight Zone!
There is a three-hour time difference between New York City and Phoenix. So, we witnessed the events unfold before we left to go to work. My husband and I continued to watch the news, hungry for any facts that would help make sense of this horror. Then, the third plane crashed into the Pentagon. That was when the concern for my country morphed into concern for my family. Clearly, this was an organized attack. We did not know how many more cities or strategic targets would be affected. What if they attacked Los Angeles next? We have a nuclear power plant 55 miles west of Phoenix. What if they decided to crash a plane into that? We had three young children to protect. We did not have a basement or bomb shelter. What was our contingency plan? Finally, the fourth plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field. Experts said it was headed to the White House. How many more attacks would happen today?
I called my mentor teacher to ask what we were supposed to do in a situation like this. Do we come to school, or is the district going to cancel classes for the day? He said we were expected to report to school for a regularly scheduled school day. Administration instructed us not to say anything about the terrorist attacks. If students asked, just redirect them. What the?! I did not know if I was emotionally stable enough to handle this. How could I show up and pretend that everything was ok? I knew the students would be anxious and need reassurance. So, I decided to fight through my own fear to go and show empathy and comfort to my students.
It was a strange day. A lot of students were absent. I remember one boy was signed out early because his Mom was in the reserves and had been called for duty. I can honestly say that the kids did not learn anything that day. Oh, we still taught our regular lessons, but I knew their minds were elsewhere. When their primary need for safety was threatened, that takes precedence over reading, writing and math.
Back in 2001, cell phones were not as ubiquitous as they are now. I had a flip phone that I kept in my purse for emergencies. Since we were not allowed to discuss the tragic events of the day at my school, I had no idea what was going on out in the world. Were more targets hit? Has any country or terrorist organization claimed responsibility yet? Was America at war? I was so relieved when the 3:30 pm bell rang. I rushed to pick up my own children from their school.
My own children attended our neighborhood elementary school. I worked at a different school about a mile and a half away from them. Even though the schools were in the same district, my children’s school handled the crisis much differently. When I picked up my kids, they updated me on everything that had happened that day. I said, “How in the world do you know all of this?” They told me that their teachers kept the news on all day long in each classroom. They were encouraged to discuss their feelings and ask any questions. Wow! What a healthy way to deal with this tragedy! I wish our administration would have allowed us to do the same.
The days and weeks following September 11 were eerie. We lived a few miles away from a small airport. We were accustomed to hearing planes pass over our house at regular intervals throughout the day. However, for a few days after the attack, all planes were grounded. I vividly remember the deafening quiet. It must be how New Yorkers feel when they travel to the country. No sirens, horns honking or yelling. The absence of city noises can be disturbing when you are accustomed to hearing them daily. The airports beefed up their security as our sense of peace and security began to crumble.
I think we changed as a country on that day. There is a dividing line separating life before September 11, 2001 and after. We became suspicious and fearful. We no longer felt invincible. Any person who looked Muslim or Middle-Eastern was subjected to bullying, hatred and discrimination. We launched an attack against our enemies. Probably the only good thing that came out of this was how Americans united together. Patriotism returned.
