Do you know of any movement promoting minimal, utilitarian writing, stripping everything down to what the recipient actually needs?
Asking because I see many people writing a rough draft, asking an AI to polish it, bloat it, and the recipient uses another AI to summarize it. Two humans, zero actual communication.
There's #plainlanguage and #Crocker 's Rules, but nothing focused specifically on cutting the fluff from everyday writing.
Could #smolwrite (or another name) be a thing?

I was happy to attend #DrupalCamp Ottawa today. Lots of great people I was happy to see.
I also presented about #DrupalCMS & #AI highlighting how it can support better #AltText and & #PlainLanguage
It was also exciting to see so many new people join!

NEW POST: I'm begging you. Use plain language.
Whenever the public has more questions than answers, when they observe people unable to explain things clearly and succinctly, or sense you are not telling them everything, they will lose trust. And that’s on you.

In this blog post, @RhondaBracey talks about how #PlainLanguage and #truthtelling have come to an art gallery and museum in Glasgow, and she challenges #museums around the world to follow that example in their #signage. https://cybertext.wordpress.com/2024/10/15/signs-of-the-times/

So besides taking pix of our lovely felines, I've recently been reworking my portfolio site to showcase my day-job skills.
(I'm a technical writer, one who tries to explain complex technical topics in plain language.)
If you're interested, please take a look. I'd appreciate any (well-intended) feedback: https://lanceleonard.com/

Thank you for creating #plainLanguage versions of exhibition descriptions, KW Berlin!
It makes #art #accessible to far more people. People whose native language is neither English nor German. People who are not familiar with curators’ lingo. All kinds of neurodivergent people.

CW: Writing/editing trick
A lot of writing, especially academic writing, is mired in abstraction that can be avoided by finding the real verb. For example:
Discussion of X took place → X was discussed
We carried out measurement of Y → We measured Y
It demonstrates close alignment with Z → It aligns closely with Z#amediting #editing #copyediting #EditingTips #writing #WritingCommunity #abstraction #PlainLanguage #acwri

I'm very excited our paper about RateMyPDF.com was accepted to #ICAIL International Conference on #AI and #Law in Braga, Portugal.
Going to incorporate reviewer suggestions and new features that we've built since submission before sharing the paper itself.
Meanwhile, I've have been hacking on RateMyPDF to add more useful #plainLanguage and #readability suggestions. Biggest issue is supporting larger uploads. Integrating tasks and a job queue with #Python #Flask and #Celery is new to me.

Quite impressive for a bot. If you are a #medcomms professional, do you anticipate the application of AI in medcomms and plain language summaries in the coming days?

Hello! I've been lurking for a while, but I haven't done a proper #Introduction yet.
I'm primarily a nonfiction editor, specializing in #PlainLanguage. I post a monthly cartoon (and occasionally write) about editing on my blog (www.ivacheung.com/blog). #AmEditing
I offer #PlainLanguage training: workshops for organizations and courses at #SFU & #UBC.
I'm also a patient-oriented researcher interested in #MentalHealth and #KnowledgeTranslation.
Indexing cookbooks is how I relax. #AmIndexing
