  1. IC 1396A The Elephant Trunk nebula, located in the constellation of Cepheus, about 2,400 light years away.

This has been an elusive target for me, which I've attempted to image many times over the last few years, only to be disappointed because it is quite dim and either needs a LOT of integration (exposure) time, or imaging from a darker site than my backyard, to get a higher signal to noise ratio. This is the result of 8.3h from a Bortle 4 site.

  6. A couple of recent targets I imaged and processed in PixInsight. NGC 7000 the North America Nebula, and NGC 6992 the Eastern Veil Nebula. Both captured using 2 different dual-narrowband filters, to get H-alpha, Sulphur-II and Oxygen-III wavelengths of light.

  11. Astrophotography images are usually flat final images — but the stars in them are not all at the same distance.

My first PixInsight script, ParallaxStarLayers, uses GAIA data to create separate star layers by distance for parallax effects and animated presentations.

  16. New blog post!

I am back at astrophotography, and this time I can do it from my house, no need to freeze myself in the field. And so I was able to do the longest acquisition time ever for me, almost seven hours.

Spring is here so the target of choice was galaxies, but I only have a relatively wide angle lens, so I went with the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.

Editing was done in Pixinsight and GIMP, and I am wondering, how many people use Pixinsight here? What are your typical processing pipelines? Maybe we could exchange notes, I am a noob at Pix and would love to see how you edit your photos.

Anyway, I am attaching a teaser trailer here, full pic in the blog post:

  21. Today I've been integrating 270 exposures, 90s seconds each, for a total of 6h 45m, with darks, biases and flats.

First time, an hour in, there was a temporary power loss and I had to start from the beginning.

Second time, hour and a half in, Pixinsight process was killed because it used up the whole RAM and swap, and I had to start from the beginning.

I raised swap from 512MB to 64GB, and finally, the third time worked, it took more than two hours for WBPP to finish.

  26. Woaaah - Pixinsight just released an astro-image on their site containing the trail of the Artemis mission visible in a deep sky image. How cool is that?!

  30. Playing around with some images captured on a clear dark night late September. One is a single 2-minute tracked image looking over some treetops in #TerraNovaNP #DarkSkyPreserve.

The other is a stack of 20 of these tracked images (with the tree tops cropped out). Can "push" the processing a lot more with the stack.

    Canon 6D (modified), 35mm lens, iso3200 f/2.5

Single image mostly processed in #darktable. Stack mostly in #PixInsight

7-8hr data a couple of weeks ago - experimenting having reverted from NINA to Astroberry #opensource collimated the 8" 800mm Newt properly and testing the Altair Quadband filter. It's something, and I'm closer to knowing what I'll be shooting with next season...
