Progress on FONT.300, most of the uppercase Latin-1 Supplemental block is mapped, and going to normalize the mismatched lowercase accent set. But going to have to come up with something new for æ—or just accept that original is one pixel short.
Decided to split these into 3 fonts:
- Free. ASCII generated from Free/Demo content
- Pure. +glyphs that only appear in retail content
- Full. +generated glyphs#Sierra #AdventureGames #Fonts #EGA #PixelFonts #RetroGaming #RetroComputing

Ah, yes, the riveting saga of pixel fonts. 🎨 Because who doesn't yearn for the days of squinting at VCR displays and thinking, "Gee, I hope someone fixes this font in 30 years"? 🙄 Meanwhile, the art of 'colorful fringing' is back, because apparently we missed seeing our screens through a kaleidoscopic hangover. 🎉

Thanks everyone for watching me play “Astra Vortex” and make a quick pixel font live on stream! 😊 Here’s the VOD with chapter marks:

You can squeeze a matrix with 21x16 of these at 12 pixels per character at a resolution of 256x192.
A few additional pixels give you the chance to have a bold face too.
Still experimenting and tinkering with it! Very much #WIP!

These look better after a few little tweaks I did in the afternoon (better than my previous 6:00 am version whilst trying to open my eyes).

Today I released a new version of bdflib, my Python library for working with bitmap fonts in the BDF format (commonly used on Unix systems). New in this version is the `bdflib.effects.expand()` function and the `bdflib-expand` command-line tool, which can be used to aspect-correct a BDF font designed for non-square-pixel displays. In addition, the code for parsing BDF files is now much more robust, and just for the heck of it the test suite now has 100% line coverage.

To help out @vga256 I'm writing a program to extract the font from the DEC VT320 firmware. It's going pretty well, I've got all the glyphs for the 80-column mode, and I figured out how to correct for the VT320's extremely non-square pixels, so it looks quite readable.

8x8 Font Advent Calendar 2024 Day 5
IBM-3270
IBM's 1971 terminal set the stage for "green screen" interfaces for a few decades even long after the addition of a few more colours.
The terminal font is surprisingly stylised for a business machine and it's reproduced here as best as it can in an 8x8 pixel font with bold variant.

Passion for a work that’s driving you forward.
Perhaps not because it’s good work but because it is satisfying to do, and learn? #typeface #design #TypeDesign #typography #pixelfonts #fonts -
I awoke from a dream that i created a typeface in a fleeting moment.
I realize that a dream must be realized, but that also this dream is already on my tasklist.
So I opened up Glyphs.app…

Taking some time to automatize stuff. I now have a script that transforms a bitmap into classes ready to be used as pixelated flags.
This will eventually end up in a repo. Not that it is particularly useful to have inline flags in 1236 bytes and 16 colo[u]rs... but art doesn't need to serve a purpose, right?

Is it possible to fit 16x16 font glyphs into a TV head?
As soon as I saw that these existed I knew it was something I had to try with my extension of GNU Unifont (called UnifontEX), which even has emoji. Unifont and UnifontEX are both 8x16 for anything that can reasonably fit, and 16x16 for anything that can't. I know that people have gone to 15x18 or 15x20, but some glyphs do truly require the full 16x16 cell size, so 16x18 or 16x18 would have to be the case. I'm of course wanting Unicode support (including characters above Plane 0, of which there are many in the font), so that means I'd likely need a Raspberry Pi. I'm also curious which of the formats at http://stgiga.github.io/UnifontEX/ would be best. There are a lot to choose from, including ones that were never offered by upstream Unifont.
I for the past while and especially recently had wanted to wear UnifontEX glyph displays either on my shirt or then a hat, so I could speak my more passionate topics without having to worry about voice level causing me problems.
I also had for the past week felt like I wanted to, if I gave a tech talk or ever appeared in a video, to never show my face and instead hide in a fursuit head, but if I trick one of these out with cat ears, then that would do. The Raspberry Pi could theoretically let me use it as a MIDI player, obviously at safe volumes.
Like, this TV head is something I'd actually want to do, and I'd sorta been thinking about adjacent topics recently. As an Earthbound reference, I would name mine "Lumine", after Lumine Hall from Earthbound. I'd go for a green shell for them and I'd predominantly use green or RGB colors for the text.
Interesting idea: put fursuit fur (or scales if you are a scalie) onto a TV head.
Fursuit head or TV head?
"Why not both?"
Obviously this will all be several years in the future due to my current state of nonemployment. Nonetheless I'm still curious. Also, if any of these ideas are inspirational, I give full permission to use them. Same for the font. I really don't care too much about what people do with my content.
In other news: UnifontEX got used in the game Gem Frenzy (https://theyippies.itch.io/gem-frenzy), and I got credited in the Itch.io game description.
Also my birthday is at the end of the month. #unicode #furry #fursuithead #tvhead #unifontex #rgbled #rgbleds #rgb #font #pixelfonts #pixelfont #unifont #raspberypi #raspberrypipico #luminehall #earthbound #16x16px #indiegame #birthdaysoon #tech #technology #techtalk #techtalks #leddisplay #displays #leddisplays #shirtdisplay #hatdisplay #scalie #scales #furry #indiedevs #catears #midi -

Melanie
I created this stylish new 8x8 bitmap font after being inspired by a recent fully-scalable typeface called Melindrosa by Flavia Zimbardi.

Quirky PC
Early PC video cards featured a familiar serif 8x8 font.
Over the years different manufactures tweaked a few glyphs (ATI), made a serif version (Amstrad), or just plain stylized parts (AMI & Phoenix BIOS) all of which gave a slightly off-brand feel.
Here's a new font that celebrates those differences by embracing these odd quirks for a very not-quite-in-Kansas PC feel.

Matinee
The 1920's art deco movement has inspired a lot of design and plenty of typography to go with it. Personally having already published SIX such 8x8 typefaces I wasn't sure I could do something new...
Matinee however takes that art deco, keeps it bold and contrasted and yet softens some hard edges to keep it friendly and comes with a small caps variant.

Atari ST 6x6
The Atari ST used the GEM "Graphical Environment Manager" for its desktop UI and this cute little 6x6 font deviated from the usual GEM one to provide something that felt compact but without too much compromise.

Discworld
Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels are a fantastical comedic romp through a crazy world of heroes, villains and improbable but familiar situations.
The 1995 graphical adventure loosely follows the "Guards, Guards!" book and adorns the game with gorgeous art and voice acting and a small pixel font for us to admire.

Uni9
Uni9 is another GEOS font this time attempting to reproduce the incredible Universe font in a mere 9 point size. It's a very nice adaptation and the fixed-width renderer here doesn't quite do the font justice (note the trimming of g and y to squeeze it in to 8 pixels).

ZX Revue
Revue, created by Colin Brignall in 1968, could be found everywhere in the 70s & 80s. Gamers might recognize it from the title screen and livery of the 1987 arcade classic After Burner from SEGA.
Here's a brand new attempt to squeeze that distinctive face, complete with lower-case, into an 8x8 grid and the outcome is quite successful I think.
