Un bug en el Pixel Fold inutiliza la pantalla exterior: la culpa sería de una actualización de software

Usuarios de la primera generación del Google Pixel Fold reportan que, tras una actualización reciente, la pantalla de cubierta deja de funcionar por completo una vez que Android termina de cargar. Google no emitió respuesta oficial, pero la comunidad ya encontró un parche provisorio.

Cuando una de esas pantallas deja de funcionar, toda la propuesta de valor se derrumba. Y eso es exactamente lo que están viviendo varios propietarios del Google Pixel Fold de primera generación.

El caso que encendió las alarmas fue compartido en Reddit por el usuario Chahine_sama, quien describió que su Pixel Fold llevaba meses comportándose de forma errática: a veces la pantalla de cubierta se ponía en negro aleatoriamente, otras veces era la pantalla interior la que hacía lo mismo. Un simple reinicio siempre resolvía el problema, por lo que el usuario no lo tomó con demasiada seriedad al principio.

El punto de inflexión llegó cuando el teléfono se apagó al quedarse sin batería. Al volver a encenderlo tras cargarlo, la pantalla exterior dejó de funcionar por completo. La pantalla interior continuaba operando con normalidad, pero la exterior permanecía completamente negra.

Lo más revelador del caso es que la pantalla no está físicamente dañada. Cada vez que el Pixel Fold arranca, la pantalla exterior enciende correctamente y muestra el logo de Google sin problemas. Pero en el momento en que Android termina de cargar, la pantalla vuelve a ponerse negra y queda inutilizable. Eso sugiere con fuerza que no se trata de una falla de hardware sino de algo en el software que está desactivando la pantalla luego del inicio del sistema.

El usuario probó todas las soluciones obvias: reiniciar el dispositivo, arrancar en modo seguro, restablecer las preferencias de aplicaciones y revisar si alguna configuración de pantalla oculta había sido activada accidentalmente. Ninguna funcionó.

La solución, por ahora, vino de la comunidad y no de Google. Una aplicación llamada Fold Switcher, disponible en GitHub y F-Droid, logró resolver el problema: al abrir la app y cambiar la configuración del dispositivo a «Rear Display» o «REAR_DISPLAY_OUTER_DEFAULT», la pantalla exterior volvió a funcionar de inmediato. El parche funciona en modo de usuario estándar, sin necesidad de herramientas avanzadas como Shizuku.

El caso no parece aislado: otro usuario en el mismo hilo de Reddit reportó síntomas prácticamente idénticos luego de actualizar su dispositivo, lo que genera preocupación adicional en una categoría —la de los plegables— que ya arrastra suficiente ansiedad por durabilidad. Los usuarios aceptan las bisagras frágiles y las pantallas ultrafinas porque esperan una experiencia de software pulida. Pero cuando una actualización puede deshabilitar la mitad del teléfono, se vuelve mucho más difícil confiar en el dispositivo a largo plazo.

Rynek składanych smartfonów zatoczył koło. Gdy Google porzuciło swój unikalny, szeroki format „paszportu” na rzecz standardów Samsunga, wydawało się, że debata o idealnych proporcjach jest zakończona. No jednak nie.

Najnowsze doniesienia z Korei sugerują, że zarówno nadchodzący „iPhone Fold”, jak i nowy, składany model Samsunga, mogą wskrzesić ideę szerokiego ekranu.

Jak donosi ETNews, cytowany przez inne serwisy (m.in. 9to5Mac oraz Digital Trends), rok 2026 może przynieść renesans formatu, który wielu uznało za martwy.

Powrót do proporcji 4:3

Według przecieków, Apple planuje wyposażyć swój składany telefon w wewnętrzny ekran o przekątnej 7,69 cala (lub 7,58 cala wg innych źródeł) i proporcjach 4:3. To kluczowa informacja, bo dokładnie takie proporcje ma iPad. Oznacza to, że aplikacje na iPhone’a Fold nie będą musiały być „rozciągane” czy dziwnie skalowane – będą działać natywnie jak na małym tablecie.

Co ciekawe, Samsung – dotychczasowy orędownik wysokich i wąskich ekranów – rzekomo pracuje nad modelem „Wide Fold”. Urządzenie to miałoby zaoferować wewnętrzny ekran 7,6 cala (również w formacie 4:3) oraz zewnętrzny ekran 5,4 cala (nieco większy niż planowane 4,75 cala u Apple).

Dlaczego teraz?

Ben Schoon z 9to5Google trafnie zauważa ironię sytuacji. Google w swoim pierwszym Pixel Foldzie postawiło na szeroki ekran, co było świetne do oglądania filmów, ale słabe dla aplikacji, które na Androidzie rzadko wspierały tryb tabletu. Teraz, gdy Google „naprawiło” Androida pod kątem tabletów, samo zrezygnowało z tego designu już w modelu Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Tymczasem Apple wchodzi na rynek „na gotowe”. Dzięki potężnej bazie aplikacji iPadowych, format 4:3 jest dla nich naturalnym wyborem. Samsung z kolei może chcieć zaoferować alternatywę dla serii Z Fold, która lepiej sprawdzi się w multitaskingu i konsumpcji mediów – upodabniając się do tabletu bardziej niż kiedykolwiek.

Jeśli plotki się potwierdzą, przyszłoroczna premiera składanego iPhone’a (oraz odpowiedź Samsunga) może sprawić, że nasze kieszenie wypełnią się szerszymi urządzeniami, a nie „pilotami do telewizora”.

F-Droid blocks it because it as not compatible, which is probably why Seed Vault wouldn't restore it.

My alternate solution: just pull down the menu, select the on/off icon, then select lockdown.

This prevents a power button push giggling the device and breaking wireless Qi charging connection.

I really get in my own head sometimes and just cause havoc. I was determined this morning that I was going to get a OnePlus Open. I have an OG Pixel Fold. I also have an iPhone 16 Pro Max. I have two phones, big whoop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When I get in a valley, mentally I convince myself I need to spend money. still might I dunno but I’m not gonna be all crazy about it. Sheesh 🙄

Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold will get two extra years of OS updates

Google’s latest Pixel smartphones come with a guarantee that they’ll continue to receive operating system and security updates for at least seven years. But that’s only a promise Google has been making for a little over a year, and it only applies to the Pixel 8 and newer phones.

Older models got five years of security updates, but only three years of major OS updates, and some phones like the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a were quickly approaching their last expected major Android OS update. That’s no longer the case though, as Google has updated its support page to indicate that Pixel 6 and newer phones will now get updates for 5 years from the date when they first became available in the US. That means the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series as well as the Pixel Fold will now get new versions of Android for at least two more years than had been promised when the phones were first launched.

Interestingly, that support page used to give actual end of support dates for each Pixel device. Now it just tells you how many years to expect, which means you may need to do a little searching and/or math to figure out the actual end of support for a specific device.

Interestingly Google is not extending support for the Pixel Tablet, which is actually the most recent device listed above. Despite the fact that it was released in June, 2023, the tablet is only guaranteed to receive Android version updates through June, 2026 although it will continue to receive security updates until at least June, 2028.

But maybe that shouldn’t be surprising since rumor has it that Google has decided to scrap development of future Pixel Tablet devices, suggesting that the company doesn’t see much of a future for its current tablet strategy.
