  1. And the pipeline works for the front camera too. Front and ultrawide are both Sony IMX712 sensors, so the whole pipeline “just worked” after some minor changes. The main camera will probably be much more difficult, because it is not fixed focus. It’s a Samsung Isocell GN8.

But when I started this a couple of months ago, I would never have thought to ever have a working camera. So let’s see how far I’ll get. #mobilelinux #pixel9a

  2. I don’t have any pictures to share right now, because I don’t want to accidentally reveal my location, but the quality of the ultrawide really is comparable to Android in daylight. It does not have any of googles ML processing for fancy HDR or night mode, but it is genuinely good, very usable. Compared to the previous software path (even GPU accelerated), the phone also only needs about half as much power while showing the 30fps viewfinder. #mobilelinux #pixel9a

  3. Ok, this is some major progress: I (or rather the LLM) spent the last week after work (it also "worked" quite a bit unattended while I was working) and created a fully working hardware ISP integration for the Exynos ISP frontend (sensor raw Bayer, lens shading, demosaic) and backend core (RGB and YUV postprocessing, denoise, sharpening, etc.) integrated with a custom libcamera IPA. The code is likely absolute slop, but it’s slop that lets me take actual good photos 1/2 #mobilelinux #pixel9a

  4. I have code that automatically marks postmarketOS as bootable, but if someone forgets to do that, it can quickly end badly.

If anyone works on Pixel devices, keep this caveat in mind. Always ensure you have at least one slot that is marked bootable.

  5. I’ve heard from another person working on a Pixel 9 Pro XL that bricked their device in an unexpected way:

When a Pixel 6 or later boots and its active slot is not marked as successful, it will mark the slot as unbootable and switch to the other slot. It turns out that if the other slot is marked unbootable as well, the phone bricks. It will show up as Pixel ROM recovery or Pixel BL1 recovery and there is no way to get out of that, you have to send the device in. 1/2

  6. So there we go, first picture taken on postmarketOS with decent colors. There are a lot of issues still, for example, the camera app gets stuck after taking a couple of pictures. The preview jumps around weirdly and despite using GPU debayering, the CPU is quite busy, which means the phone gets pretty warm quickly. Also, the code is a mess. I am amazed it works at all though. As mentioned at the beginning, it’s mostly Claude coding #mobilelinux #pixel9a

  7. The first picture taken (with a very crude script, no libcamera) on the Pixel 9a ultrawide camera. #mobilelinux #pixel9a
