  1. I'm funding this from my own pocket, so nothing that's exactly bad, but it's supposed to be a community run project, so the community is going to have to

    However, it's insensible for me to ask for a community to support this financially when most of them are offline, and there are some personal setbacks that I've been having in actually developing connections and an understanding with the people around here.

    A lot of you know me personally, but I haven't really made an effort for you.

  2. I have been trying to figure out multiple things from my homebase as I maintain and run Pitha, while also thinking about my own mental and physical well being.

    I've been doing well in some aspects of my life, but almost in par with the amount of things I'm doing wrong too.

    They say the truth doesn't sell, and that's true. For yes, this is me being realistic and transparent to what's going on with me. Not trying to sell an opinion or even attention-maxxing, just sharing my mind.

  3. It's been a while since I have been seriously posting anything on the Fediverse, or even any updates shared on Pitha Social, and it's been weighing on me for a while.

    I notice that the userbase of Pitha is stable (it's invite-only) but the MAUs is going down by the time, which is something I tested by not inviting anybody for the past two months despite Pitha completing three whole months on the Fediverse! :)

  4. I want to pen down some of my thoughts on the Fedi about social media in general, and what's been going on in my head as someone who's overwhelmingly in charge of @pitha and also someone who is trying to juggle between real life responsibilities alongside this project, and other things that I have in hand.

  5. #Mastodon 4.6 is here, and we've updated #pitha accordingly! It's been a long time in the works, but it's finally ready.

    In this release, @pitha is getting Collections — a way to share curated collections of profiles to help old and new users discover more of the #Fediverse.

    You can check out #Collections on the left sidebar on desktop! :)

    We're also updating the look of profiles, alongside many quality of life and accessibility improvements. Read more here: blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/06/

  6. Trying something new with @pitha. If you're seeing this from web, or your browser, you will notice the theme shifted from light to dark mode.

    I changed the theme functionality a bit, let me know what you think about it! :)

  7. The News Section in @pitha is now much-much better. Suggests better stuff.
    I've replaced getting my news from here than watching TV (which I barely do) :P

  8. Second, we welcome two community and experience #moderators in our community:

    @ZGDX_Siz aka, The Chaos Architect
    @WRC aka, General Tso

    Other than me and @pitha , those two are the people you reach out to if you want to know more about Pitha Social and if you have any other queries or concerns!

    That is all for this month, and a Happy #Eid Mubarak to everyone who is celebrating!

    We have big plans for #pitha and are excited for our next initiatives.

    Be on the lookout! :D

  9. We've got new members out in @pitha, and some exciting news to share!

    First, our newest:

    @Mehraj
    #undergrad living in #japan, and someone i personally enjoy spending time with!

    @tamjid
    learnt an interesting tadbit about him, and he's a data engineer in the #us!

    @Yameen_tazwar
    as his bio suggests, a #LARP enthusiast, that's pretty much about it.

    @Soumikk
    a very curious person among us, and loves to have a lot of fun with me and @siamskii !

    @RM3G
    the only #delphi developer in #pitha!

  10. Round 2 just happened right now. I was using a much less taxing relay after the previous incident and turns out, that too was not doing the servers any well.

    No relays now, but more content from more servers will be now natural, making the federation better from now onwards.

    For the non technical people here, following more people from different servers makes us as the whole instance more visible, and resilient as a community!

    Genuinely makes people wonder what even is @pitha. :)

    #pitha

  11. We want this to be a cohesive and warm community - just how you share pitha with each other and gather around a bonfire to share your stories with everyone.

    That's why I named it Pitha.

    It's not just a social media network, it's a place where you delve your soul into for your own community, and just be yourself!

    Let's foster this into such a community, that you would like yourself and so that it's even appealing to your loved ones!

    Let's get Pitha started, shall we? 🥴

    #pitha

  12. A lot of people thought Pitha was going to be a restaurant of some sort when I was first teasing it out! xD

    And they aren't to blame! Pitha is literally "rice cake" in Bengali, and it's a sweet delicacy in winter here.

    That's the essence I want to hold for Pitha Social too.

    #pitha

  13. The only thing that was making me unique, my own culture and identity, is the thing that I was shunning.

    And that's the thing that was holding me back all this while.

    That is yet another reason, on why I decided to build @pitha.

    Both as a statement to my old self, that was hiding his Bengali self, and to create a space for us, that we can truly call, our own.

    #pitha

  14. Our current digital public squares are owned by people who don't understand or care about us. Zuckerberg, Musk, and other owners.

    The solution? The Fediverse exists.
    It's been proven, for the past 10 years (that's how long the Fediverse has been here! :D)

    #pitha

  15. Call me class-conscious or even racist if you'd like to for my decision of keeping this invite-only, but no community is supposed to be open to everybody - especially with the imminent rise of scammers, bots and now, AI impersonators.

    Anybody who has a decent understanding of the internet knows these risks, and therefore has to take precautionary measures accordingly.

    We needed this community in July 2024. We've built it now. This, is Pitha!

    #pitha

  16. Bengalis needed their own digital town square. A place where no algorithm controls what you see.

    @pitha is literally that. And it's something a lot of people have been wanting for the longest while. A quiet desire that many have had.

    It's here now. What you choose to do now is the direction that all of us will take.

    "Facebook e ai" or "Pitha teh ai?"

    You choose, what you want.
    For yourself, and our future generations.

    It's curated, ours and invite-only. Deliberately.

    #pitha

  17. More people mean more costs, and that's fine, because that means that a community is being built, and it's real. It's something that's tangible and something that we all can work with together.

    More people also mean more people to support and believe in the project, which is the necessary part here.

    Without your presence, this means nothing. But with you being here, that is proof of this being real. This being something that you truly want to see there out in the world.

    #pitha

  18. Platforms saw everything. They did nothing. Meanwhile they'll nuke an account for showing a nipple.

    That was the day I decided we needed something better. It needed @pitha.

    No American Big Tech. No data sold to the highest bidder. Hosted on private European servers.

    It costs 2,000 BDT/month to run, which is just around 20 USD. That's it.

    Every taka goes to keeping it independent. If you believe in this, support it.

    Either way — we're here now. And we're not going anywhere.

    #pitha

  19. I've seen Kolkata being on fire with the recent elections this May, and I know for a fact that there has been indeed a form of social engineering in their recent elections and how social media has played a part in this.

    None of the social platforms that most Bengalis hang out on, are owned by us. Neither does it care about our own people either, and it definitely does not understand our society.

    Handing control over to a foreign corporation with our voice is a very risky deal.

    #pitha #india

  20. I've seen Bangladesh burn in July 2024 on platforms that didn't understand what we were going through, they didn't care enough either.

    We were being shadowbanned and those who weren't they were spreading rampant misinformation out in the wild, and also inciting towards violence - that isn't beneficial for a state that has been in clash with the government before this.

    It only leads to something more unrest, and a loss of blood that could be easily avoided.

    #pitha #bangladesh #socialmedia

  21. I've just paid the server costs for the second month of @pitha, and it's genuinely unreal that it's already been a month since we all have been a part of this together!

    We are yet to go a long run, and I'm excited for the future of Pitha, because truly it's something we need in our society. It's about time that I speak more about this.

    #pitha

  22. Since this isn't profit based, it isn't going to automatically give you "a more personalized experience".

    You are the one who creates the experience, who shapes what your feed is going to look like.

    There are no algorithms, no ads to rake in profits for the company, neither are there any kind of sneaky human psychology experiments going on here, because the idea is simple:

    To create a community that fosters fair discourse, while also being free and private, and truly ours.

    #pitha

  23. Battling with an ongoing addiction with social media, I decided why not divert my energy to something that I will be proud to have made, contributed to in the long run?

    This is why I built and am maintaining @pitha right now, and it's definitely not easy, but then again, it's something I'm willing to work for, and make it succeed.

    The technology behind Pitha is @Mastodon as I have mentioned before, and it's fascinating on how it's empowering to create a new community like this.

    #pitha

  24. This wasn't how @Mastodon was created, not for the sole purpose of being a profit maximizing machine.

    It wasn't even created to generate profits in the first place.

    As one can see from their profitable counterparts (Facebook, Bluesky, X) - these are incessant echo chambers, where only some opinions are pushed and most of them being concentrated in the hands of a few.

    Also controlled an AI algorithm, that's of course tweaked and tuned by Musk's leadership.

    #mastodon #pitha

  25. I've been trying relays for a while for @pitha, and I realized I went a bit too overboard.

    What are relays, you ask? Basically delivering content from other instances in a much faster, efficient way.

    It got bad enough that the servers literally exceeded their storage limit and I quickly had to declog all that content. 😵‍💫

    #pitha

  26. I do not profit from this, as one might counterintuitively think, and it's only possible with financial contributions that I make from my own wallet!

    This is a community funded project, and even a small monthly contribution, or even one-off, is really beneficial for ensuring that @pitha is free forever.

    Free as in, freedom of speech, no megacorp taking over this, and fully ad-free.

    Your data isn't sold, and you sustain a community that actually cares about a space for discourse.

    #pitha

  27. Early this year, February - I notice that there really isn't a instance where Bangladeshis or even Bengalis hang out in the Fediverse.

    Why not create my own?

    There was the clear problem of funding and actually setting up an instance from scratch, but I decided to solo this one out and thought to myself, "Why not do this for the love of the game?"

    #pitha

  28. I knew about Mastodon back in late 2022, but I didn't tinker much with the platform back then which made me delete my account there.

    My first account was on mstdn.party, which is a pretty cool server if you ask me.

    t still didn't occur to me that I should create a community, or in Mastodon terms, an instance where all Bengalis and Bengali-speaking people can come together to freely talk on a platform that isn't owned by some foreign corporation. (I'm looking at you, Facebook)

    #pitha

  29. Let me talk a little bit about Pitha, and where I got the idea from.

    From what you can already see, it's a part of Mastodon, a federated social network. And by federated it means, a cluster of other social networks - all coming together to form a HUGE community.
