  1. CW: SARS-CoV-2 variants for New Zealand

Here's the latest variant picture for New Zealand.

After a long lag, recent sample data has been shared. However there is a gap of about a month, in late-Feb to early March.

    BA.2.86.* "Pirola" is waning under a challenge from the JN.1.* +FLiRT sub-lineages - led by KP.2.

The XDK recombinant lineage is also challenging - a combination of XBB.1.16.11 and JN.1.1.1. It has also been quite successful in France.

  3. CW: SARS-CoV-2 variants for the UK

Here's the latest variant picture for the UK - a global bellwether for new variants with it's low protections/mitigations.

As of late January, BA.2.86.* "Pirola" (94%) was dominant - with JN.1 the leading sub-lineage (59%).

JN.1.4 (14%) is showing some growth. JN.1.4 adds the ORF1a T170I mutation to JN.1. It seems that gives it a slight advantage, but hopefully not enough to cause widespread reinfections.
