Here's the latest variant picture for the UK - a global bellwether for new variants with it's low protections/mitigations.
As of late January, BA.2.86.* "Pirola" (94%) was dominant - with JN.1 the leading sub-lineage (59%).
JN.1.4 (14%) is showing some growth. JN.1.4 adds the ORF1a T170I mutation to JN.1. It seems that gives it a slight advantage, but hopefully not enough to cause widespread reinfections.

In Kooperation mit dem MHH-Institut für Immunologie und dem Deutschen Primatenzentrum Göttingen haben die Forschenden die weltweit erste Publikation über den neuen #XBB.1.5 basierten Impfstoff von Biontech veröffentlicht. Im Rahmen der „#COVID-19 Contact (CoCo)“-Studie der MHH wurden 53 MHH-Beschäftigte untersucht, die den #Impfstoff erhalten haben. Anschließend wurde deren Immunreaktion gemessen. Das Ergebnis: Nach der #Impfung mit dem neuen #Booster waren die Antikörper gegen #Omikron #Varianten deutlich angestiegen. Die Arbeit ist in der renommierten Fachzeitschrift „The Lancet Infection Diseases“ veröffentlicht worden. [.. ]
„Wir haben nicht nur eine große Menge neutralisierender Antikörper gegen Omikron XBB.1.5 gefunden, sondern auch gegen andere #Unter-Varianten“, sagt die Oberärztin Professorin Dr. Alexandra Dopfer-Jablonka, die gemeinsam mit ihrem Klinikkollegen Professor Dr. Georg Behrens die Immunstudie leitet.
