Puh, ich habs geschafft.

Ich habe mein erstes Hörbuch in einer anderen Sprache als Deutsch gehört.

Bei mir war's natürlich Englisch, weil ich keine andere Sprache ausreichend gut verstehe um mir da ein Hörbuch zuzumuten.

Obwohl ich denke, dass ich ziemlich versiert im Englischen bin, war das eine ziemliche Herausforderung. Alltags-Arbeits-Englisch und Hobby-Englisch (auch mit wirklich gutem Schul-Englisch) ist halt doch noch einmal anders als Roman-Englisch.

Damit habe ich "Piranesi" von Susanna Clarke jetzt durch und kann sagen, dass ich den Großteil recht gut verstanden habe. Die Schwierigkeit bei dem Buch kam für mich hauptsächlich daher, dass zu großen Teilen in Tagebucheinträgen verfasst ist und demnach auch Formatierungen, die geschrieben gut klappen (Auflistungen, Listen, Querverweise) im Hörbuch teilweise echt schwer nachzuvollziehen waren.

Hätte ich das Buch gelesen statt gehört, hätte ich vermutlich an einigen Stellen selbst Kartenskizzen gezeichnet, weil die Welt in der es spielt sehr speziell ist, oder eine Charakterliste geführt. So hab ich die Ortsangaben hauptsächlich zur Kenntnis genommen, aber wiederkehrende Orte oder auch Datumsangaben nur schwer identifizieren können. Bei den Datumsangaben war es aber weniger schlimm, weil die Handlung größtenteils linear verläuft und Rückblenden sehr deutlich waren.

"That anguished, pressurised feeling – a sensation somewhere between burning and falling – that extended through my torso, my limbs, my entire body was by now so familiar to me, I was astonished that it didn’t have a name and that I didn’t know it."

(I feel seen... and lucky in that while I absolutely recognise the experience, I do not have it all the time.)

Clarke goes on to describe the effects of narrative in comprehending such diffuse symptoms, and how brains can turn our ideas about the world into reality in our bodies. "A story you have on some level believed – that the world is fraught with danger – can be countered by a different story. Yes, the world is fraught with danger, but not everywhere, and not always, not here in this place and not now in this moment."
