  1. One of the most delightful birding moments I’ve had was seeing three Piping Plover chicks last year, so I thought this little one would make a good stand-in today for my son on his birthday.

  2. Time for some adorableness. 🥰 😘

This is a piping plover on the beach standing guard over her two chicks. They are TINY.

Edit: I am informed by @Avloky that she is being a "Mombrella," shielding her babies from the sun and other weather. A perfect description! 🏖️

  3. #Massachusetts beaches hit record-high for piping #plovers: A species recovering at an encouraging rate phys.org/news/2024-12-massachu

"#PipingPlovers are continuing their comeback story. Massachusetts beaches for the second straight year saw more nesting #birds than at any time in the last 4 decades. There were 1,196 nesting pairs counted—a 1.5% increase over last year and a whopping 500% spike since the program began four decades ago... #Oystercatchers also saw another consecutive record year"

  4. The respite after the scampering. The three Piping Plover chicks that completely captivated us ran very fast for short distances then stopped on a dime and kept repeating that pattern as they foraged. I think this one finally collapsed from the exertion. (Last plover chick picture for a while, I promise.)

  5. Scampering into Saturday … Piping Plover chicks are tiny, pale, and fast, so speedy that you couldn’t see them on the video we took. But we did capture this charming fluff ball running toward us.

  6. Perfect day for a stroll on the beach … one of the three Piping Plover chicks that totally charmed us as they raced around Corsons Inlet SP. With those feet, it is no wonder they’re so fast.

  7. Piping Plover chicks, unable to fly for about four weeks after hatching, are diligently tended by the parents. The little ones we had the joy of seeing were older and quite mobile but we still witnessed the parents putting themselves between beach walkers and their chicks, calling out warnings with their whistling ‘peep lo’ sounds.

  8. Seeing a pair of Piping Plovers and their three chicks was one of our anniversary birding trip highlights in Cape May. The adults are small, about 7 inches in length, and their chicks, which weigh about the equivalent of two pennies when they hatch, are tiny and super fast. One of the parents and two of the chicks are visible in this photo. They stand out a bit more against the wet sand and water than they do in dry sand. Special shoutout to the New Jersey Fish & Wildlife rangers who brought this special lifer opportunity to our attention.
