I saw a good number of Piping Plovers, most juvies, at Nickerson Beach, NY, last Friday. Juveniles, like these, seemed to be especially abundant, which speaks well of efforts to protect this endangered species on our beaches. Many of the birds I saw in the afternoon, were hunkered down in depressions in the sand, where they are well camouflaged.

The adults are small, about 7 inches in length, and their chicks, which weigh about the equivalent of two pennies when they hatch, are tiny and super fast. One of the parents and two of the chicks are visible in this photo. They stand out a bit more against the wet sand and water than they do in dry sand.
