  1. Twenty-five critical areas for #biodiversity nationally recognized in #NovaScotia

"#KBA [ #KeyBiodiversityArea] designation does not create legal protection. However, it does provide the evidence base to drive advocacy for protection where it’s needed most, as well as data to guide land-use planning and regional #stewardship."

    Peter Soroye, 6/29/2026

    Notable quotes:
“In 2025, 10 #PipingPlover pairs produced 24 fledglings within the #MiddleOhio to #PortJoli KBA - an incredible success, which demonstrates the area’s importance to this species at risk. We're thrilled to see so many valuable habitats recognized; from across the #WabanakiAcadian forests to the ocean.” – Sue Abbott, Associate Director – Atlantic Programs, Birds Canada

"Canada's #biosphere regions are places where science, communities, and #FirstNations combine their knowledge to care for the living world. The identification of 79 Key Biodiversity Areas across our Canadian biosphere regions, including the 25 announced today in Nova Scotia, illustrates what this network achieves in practice: contributing to Canada's biodiversity commitments and to the targets of the Force of Nature Strategy. Each designation is a collective victory that confirms the value of managing our territories by mobilizing all available knowledge, at every scale.” - Kate Potter, Executive Director, Canadian Biosphere Regions Association."

  3. "Last year, we had the highest number of pairs nesting in the wild to date.

There were 17 pairs in 1986.

Ten percent of the wild nesting population are actually birds that we reared through the salvage rearing program."

  5. Today's Bird Cuteness Overload:

A tiny, newly-hatched Piping Plover has a (mostly successful) go at foraging on the beach. The video is in a combination of normal speed and slo-mo, giving you a look at just how amazingly fast these wee birdies are. 🤎 🤍 🖤

"Come learn about the piping plover and what makes it so special, while taking a walk on #LaudholmBeach!

"In 1981 there were only seven pairs of piping plovers in the entire state of Maine. After decades of hard work and dedication, in 2025 there was a record 174 pairs recorded! Come learn about this federally threatened and state endangered beach-nesting shorebird and what makes it so special. Helen Manning, a Wildlife Biologist from #RachelCarsonNationalWildlifeRefuge, will lead an educational walk on the Wells Reserves Laudholm Beach to discuss the biology of the piping plover and the monitoring and management efforts that have helped this species begin to make a recovery."

  9. Another Jones Beach, NY bird last Saturday, an unseasonal Piping Plover. They usually don't return from their winter range in parts south until March or April, but in recent years, as the climate has warmed, a rare few have remained up here all winter. This winter that may have posed a problem for pipers lime this one, as the polar vortex brought weeks of intense cold and major snowfalls. Food became scarce. This Plover was out and about foraging on this first mild day in a while, and seemed to be behaving erratically.

Piping Plovers are an endangered species due to habit loss and climate change, including rising sea levels. Concerted education and outreach efforts and protection of nesting colonies (often on public beaches) have led to recovery in some places, but overall, numbers continue to decline. The Audubon Society estimates that they stand to lose half their current range by 2050 if global warming continues at its current rate.

  15. Back to bird drawings :)

"Piping plover" always sounds like an exclamation, à la "Piping Plover, Batman!" to me.

  17. Day 25 of #streamink2024 asks what inspires us, and I wish I could give you a meaningful answer for me, but actually I’m just really inspired to paint birds lately because I just think they’re neat. This sweet friend is a piping plover, a little shore bird that hangs out not far from where I lived in Canada.
Many thanks to Grey twitch.tv/greyschale for the prompt 💙
