Flash Fiction Fun on Substack
I’ve been delving into the world of Substack recently, and the bulk of my original posts there (not restacks) have been “Drabbles.” These are 100-word short stories, born in the UK in the 80’s at Birmingham University with a little help from Monty Python (of whom I’m a lifelong fan) An editor friend of mine, Sandy Smith has been posting a weekly challenge every Friday, which has been a nice distraction from the tedious task of polishing the final draft of my murder mystery.
I’ve done all three of the challenges so far, and while their quality might be questionable, the puzzle-solving-joy that they bring me is not. It’s actually quite challenging to encapsulate the beginning, middle, and end of a story into a mere 100 words. It would be easy if it were a poem, or some unresolved moment that left the reader hanging, but my novice-level understanding of the drabble form is that it must tie into a cute little package, maybe in brown paper and a bit of string. Done.

I’ve been calling it “a one-pipe problem” a la Sherlock Holmes. You have only until the pipe is finished, or the cup of coffee, or tea, or whatever it is that floats your boat, to get the bulk of it done. I haven’t given it a thorough exploring yet, but it’s on my list of places on the interwebz to check out.

A brief moment of almost-panic washed over me. Breathless terror, then euphoria, as I realized that I was universe.
No hallucinogens ground my guts, this was just the result of self-directed meditative rebellion against the wailing and caterwauling going on around me. My body was still there on the floor.
“So what now?” I wondered. “What does one do with all this infinity?”
The facilitator turned down the pulsing music. The screaming stopped, tears were dried, words were said.
Then we broke for lunch. -

The phone line is down so I can't work from home today, so I'm working from the public #library. They don't open until 10:00 ET. I was sitting on a picnic bench outside the library smoking to keep the mosquitoes away. And two hours before they open a librarian comes out to tell me there is no smoking allowed on library property, So now I'm laying in the grass on the other side of the sidewalk. 😛 #pipe-smoking #tobacco #Government -

When I first started smoking a pipe, an elderly neighbor who was well-known as a pipe smoker gave me some advice.
“To keep my wife happy, I only smoke outdoors; but only when it’s enjoyable. If it’s too cold, too wet, or too windy, it’s not enjoyable.”
“How windy is too windy?” I asked.
“Well,” he replied. “If there’s a lot of stuff blowing around the yard, like a neighbor’s cow or a witch on a bicycle, that’s too windy to enjoy a smoke.”

Coming to you from my newish #selfHosted #Pleroma instance after a couple years on #Mastodon. I was a middle class #musician back when that was a thing, trained as a #drummer and, since I was 13, I put all my dedication and dollars into making an honest, modest living as a sideman. I grew up listening to #classicRock from half a generation earlier, and played lots of #blues in my hometown, #Chicago, before I became a #jazz snob and got my 1st steady gig with a cruiseship showband.
I ended up in #LosAngeles just in time for the Great Depression and subsequent triumph of #Socialism for the Rich™, which I thought was as bad as it could get until they passed the CARES act. I retrained myself at the #piano when club gigs no longer paid enough for me to hire a bassist and piano player to accompany me in playing my earliest efforts at #songwriting. My #radicalism was firmly established by the time the DNC cheated Bernie out of the nomination. The 1st time, I mean. 2020 finished the job. I don't know what I am now, a #progressive, an #anarchosyndicalist, or what. I just know I'm not a Democrat and find the #BizarroWorld direction of many calling themselves #liberal to be absolutely terrrifying, as we already have one intolerant and sociopathic "opposition".
I am content to identify with my #outsider artist influences like #TomWaits and #WarrenZevon, general #geeks like #JoeJackson, and the #workingClass works of #BobDylan, #NeilYoung, and #BruceSpringsteen.
I've almost entirely freed myself of the dependence on proprietary platforms and use and support several #openSource projects. #Owncast and #OBS have made it possible for me to keep my #music #livestream alive after sacrificing roughly 75% of my viewers when I left FB for labelling my #artist page a source of #misinformation. #FreeSpeech and fighting #citizensUnited, #corporatism, and #censorship and #propaganda are my primary political concerns.
I'm a fairly accomplished amateur at #cooking and I love #tobacco after discovering #pipesmoking and #cigars and quitting a 30-year cigarette habit. I drink #beer and #scotch throughout the weekly livestream, which you can follow for a notification when I go live at @kyle
Saving the most important thing for last, I generally love people and I am much, much more fun and easy going than this introduction makes me sound lol
