Hype for the Future 69B: People’s Republic of Amherst, Massachusetts
Introduction The Town of Amherst, Massachusetts, is perhaps most notable for the progressive and often socialist leanings associated with Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. However, just a few additional amenities may exist within the town outside campus limits, though the town-gown divide is far from balanced as in Northampton, home to Smith College, further west. Amenities Associated with the Hampshire College campus by the southwestern […] -

Hype for the Future 56D: The Connecticut River Valley
Iconic Attractions The Connecticut River Valley is most notable as the dividing line between the States of Vermont (west) and New Hampshire (east). Further south, numerous cities and towns are split by the Connecticut River, with the most notable town lines occurring along the river, such as the line between the City of Northampton and the Town of Hadley for which Route 9 crosses the river. Notable Tributaries Perhaps the most notable tributaries of the Connecticut River, both of which are […]https://novatopflex.wordpress.com/2025/12/26/hype-for-the-future-56d-the-connecticut-river-valley/

Hype for the Future 55I: Northampton, Massachusetts
Overview Northampton is the traditional county seat of Hampshire County, Massachusetts, located along the Connecticut River, Massachusetts State Route 9, and United States Route 5 and bypassed by Interstate 91. The community is officially recognized as the “City of Northampton,” a stark contrast from the larger “Town of Amherst” further east which also has official city status (there are also “Cities” in Massachusetts with town status as such communities do not have wards). On the Horizon 23C: The State Forests of Western Mass
Western Massachusetts is very differently organized from the more dominant eastern side of the Commonwealth. Throughout much of Berkshire County in particular, the state forests share names with potentially namesake towns, a feature that also continues into select portions of Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, and Worcester Counties. In Hampden County, Tolland and Granville are names of towns where state forests exist under such town names. In Berkshire County, Otis and Florida may be additional […]https://novatopflex.wordpress.com/2025/11/23/on-the-horizon-23c-the-state-forests-of-western-mass/

Anyone in the #PioneerValley of #massachusetts know an artist who would make me a wood sign with engraved words, paintings of flora and fauna, and a few other things for my front yard?
-
We attended the Pioneer Valley Show yesterday. The tiny rural town of Finch Hatton was packed! Hard to capture everything going on but there were rides, games, food, animals, heavy machinery, equestrian, wood chopping, and more! The day closed off with a fireworks display.
I was impressed by the prize winning pineapples—I will need to up my game (http://home.wezm.net/~wmoore/pineapples.html) to compete with these monsters.
-
Some dusk photos from around the farm.
-
Foggy in the valley this morning, but it has cleared now. Also just had some Sunbirds visit.
-
After lunch at the Criterion Hotel in Finch Hatton we visited Araluen Cascades today. The last time I was here was in Dec 2016.

New post.
Versions of both the Jan. 7 City Council agenda, and Jan. 16 Rules Committee agenda were image-only until sometime around 3:30 PM on Jan. 9, with an updated version being published during the drafting of this article.

The understated, unselfconscious boosterism of this map's caption:
"Map showing location of interesting places"
(From The Flow of Time in the Connecticut Valley, by two geologists, George Bain and Howard Meyerhoff, originally published in 1942, republished in 1976)
These include an asbestos mine, several lead mines, and Mt. Sugarloaf, among other items.

Anyone in the #PioneerValley want a young American Elm? We have like a dozen in our yard, and since they're pretty rare, we'd rather find them a home than just pull them.
UPDATE: it's a slipoery elm. Still native, but much more common.

Slavery in the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts by Robert H. Romer
Topics
#blackchattelslavery, #massachusetts, #slavery, #connecticutvalley, #newengland, #unitedstatesofamerika, #britishcolonialism, #colonialism, #pioneervalley, #deerfield, #Africandiaspora, #antiblacknessIn this first history of slavery in western Massachusetts in colonial times, Robert H. Romer demonstrates that slavery was pervasive in the Pioneer Valley in the 1700s, where many of the ministers and other “important people” owned black slaves. To show the role of slavery in the valley, Professor Romer presents a “snapshot” of slavery, choosing a moment (1752) and a place (the main street of Deerfield) to present detailed information about the slaves who lived in that place at that time — and their owners.

Please read my latest article about lead poisoning in western Massachusetts.

Something that is also constantly on my mind. We see cities starting to grok the social, fiscal, and environmental benefits of deprioritizing cars and re-prioritizing humans, but I live in a small city in a moderately dense region (#macorva, the Massachusetts #pioneervalley ), and folks here haven't really even started the journey. How do we kickstart #urbanism in smaller urban areas? #bikes #pedestrians #micromobility #notjustbikes #waroncars
