WINDOW ROCK, Arizona -- "A coalition of grassroots groups released a statement in response to recent announcements and actions by #NavajoNation President #BuuNygren regarding coal development, carbon market deals, and potential new mining projects.

"The coalition will host a Press Conference from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MDT) on Monday, April 21, 2025, outside the Navajo Nation Council Chambers during the first day of the Navajo Nation Council’s Spring Session. Please bring a folding chair, water, hats, and sunscreen, and dress appropriately for the weather to keep yourself safe and comfortable during the Press Conference.

"Summary of full statement:

● We call on the Navajo Nation President to stop making deals that degrade our land, water, and future.

● We urge tribal leaders not to repeat historical mistakes with respect to uranium extraction: Leave this Nayee’, Łeetso, in the ground. The cleanup and remediation of hundreds of abandoned mines must be completed, prioritizing public health safety and ecosystem health.

● We stand against the transport of uranium ore across the Navajo Nation because it is inconsistent with the intent of the Navajo Radioactive and Related Substances, Equipment, Persons and Materials Transportation Act of 2012, regardless of jurisdictional limits on our highways and roads.

● We steadfastly OPPOSE coal development, which negatively impacts the lands, water, and health of the Navajo people and contributes to #ClimateChange.

● We stand in protection of our water, health, traditional lifeways, Earth bundles (#Jish), and #MotherEarth.

"We call on all Diné #LandDefenders, #WaterProtectors, healers, young leaders, #matriarchs and warriors to stand together at WINDOW ROCK on APRIL 21, 2025. "The Nygren Administration’s recent statements and actions do not reflect the
will of the Diné People, and we call on our Navajo Nation Council to ensure that such actions are not taken in violation of our Free, Prior, and Informed Consent.

"The International Uranium Film Festival (#IUFF) will return to Window Rock on November 7 and 8, 2025. This is the 4th edition of the IUFF to be held in Window Rock and will take place in cooperation with the #NewMexico #SocialJusticeAndEquity Institute at the #NavajoNation Museum.

"During these two days, the festival will present an extraordinary selection of specially curated documentaries and fiction movies about #UraniumMining and the #environmental and human consequences of the #military and civilian #nuclear industries.

"The Window Rock IUFF will focus in particular on films about Native American and Indigenous peoples around the world, particularly in North America. This is where, 80 years ago, the first atomic bomb was detonated on #Indigenous land. As a result, these lands are among those most affected by uranium mining and the nuclear industry in general.

"Until now, few Indigenous filmmakers have tackled this difficult and often hidden subject. For this reason, the organizers are dedicating an award to promote the production of Indigenous and Native American films about nuclear power, nuclear weapons, nuclear waste, uranium mining, and their consequences.

"The best film by an indigenous or Native American filmmaker will receive a special festival trophy in Window Rock.

"Now in its 14th year, the International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) is dedicated to presenting films on all nuclear issues and the entire nuclear fuel chain: from uranium mining to nuclear waste, from nuclear war to nuclear accidents. This unique-in-the-world film festival - named 'One of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals 2024' by MovieMaker Magazine - was founded in 2010 in Rio de Janeiro and took place for the first time in May, 2011. "Uqualla, traditional practitioner who served as the council's vice chairwoman, spoke at the #AwarenessWalk here on Saturday, as Native people from the region gathered to shut down Pinyon Plain uranium mine, and stop the #radioactive haul trucks from the #GrandCanyon to the #UraniumMill in the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.

"Uqualla said Havasupai tested the soil and air and found contamination. 'There are people that hunt, people that gather medicine, they told us we can't go there anymore, until we stop them, but they are still contaminating.'

"Havasupai never said 'Yes' to this #UraniumMining.

"The tarps are not sufficient that are covering the trucks and there are no warnings to the people."

"The Havasupai Tribe said the Navajo Nation has disregarded the aboriginal people who live on the land, and failed to consult them before entering into a dangerous agreement for #radioactive #uranium hauling. There are two trucks now each weekday, traveling at high rates of speed, each carrying 24 tons of radioactive matter that is only covered with tie-down tarps from the Grand Canyon to the #UraniumMill in Utah.

"Havsuw' Baaja, Havasupai, are Guardians of the #GrandCanyon and have opposed #UraniumMining since time immemorial to protect their land and water for future generations, the Havasupai Tribe said today.

"We are deeply disappointed in #EnergyFuels Resources, Inc., and the Navajo Nation for not including us in their discussions that ultimately led to the dangerous decision to allow hauling of radioactive material across our aboriginal lands," the Havasupai Tribe said.

"The Navajo Tribe is not the only tribe or community affected by this activity."

TUBA CITY -- "#LeonaMorgan, Dine' co-founder of #HaulNo!, said the Navajo Nation is now "back peddling" by allowing radioactive uranium waste to be transported through Dine' communities. This radioactive transport from the #GrandCanyon means even more deadly waste for another Native community -- the #WhiteMesaUte community in #Utah.

"Now, with little or no information along the haul route, the Navajo government expects the Dine' Chapters on the route to each have an emergency preparedness plan. Leona asked if the Dine' communities are aware of this and whether the Navajo Chapters are certified to deal with radioactive emergencies.

"'Who are their First Responders?' Ultimately, Dine' will have to confront the Navajo President and the Navajo Department of Justice, she said.
'We were not included in that agreement,' Leona said of the agreement between the Navajo Nation and #Energy Fuels.

"'There was no free, prior and informed consent,' Leona said, quoting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [#UNDRIP]. 'The people in the communities were not consulted.'

"'How can they start transporting on February 12th, when there aren't even any checkpoints? We don't even have an #AirMonitoring system,' Leona said of the lack of preparation for radioactive
transport on the Navajo Nation.
Energy Fuels plans to pass through Navajo communities with six to ten trucks of radioactive waste,
beginning on Feb. 12, 2025.

"Leona urged communities to organize, and pointed out that Navajo Chapters can have their own checkpoints. With the new push for '#DrillBabyDrill,' by the U.S. President, the Navajo Nation faces an uncertain future, she said. The U.S. is investing money into the development of #CriticalEarthMinerals and investing in Energy Fuels mill at White Mesa Ute.

"'We need to push our government to do what we want -- not what the federal government wants.'

"'It's going to get worse because they think nuclear is clean energy,' Leona said of the push for alternative energy.

"The Navajo Nation's agreement with Energy Fuels means more dangerous radioactive dumping in the #WhiteMesaUte community. In the agreement, Energy Fuels states it will transport 10,000 tons of uranium-bearing cleanup materials from abandoned #UraniumMines within the Navajo Nation.

"Leona was recently voted by the Navajo Nation Council to serve on the Diné #UraniumRemediation Advisory Commission, in an advisory position to the Navajo President and Council.

PHOENIX— "Local and national public-interest groups, as well as #Havasupai Tribe members, delivered more than 17,000 petition signatures to Gov. Katie Hobbs today urging her to use her authority to close the Pinyon Plain uranium mine that threatens the waters of the #GrandCanyon and the Havasupai Tribe.

"This comes after the groups, scientists and many others sent a letter to the governor in January outlining the threats posed by this mine and asking for her assistance with its closure.

"'The Havasupai Tribe, other Tribal leaders, and those who care about protecting Grand Canyon and its waters have fought the Pinyon Plain uranium mine for decades because it threatens the waters of Grand Canyon and the Havasupai,' said Sandy Bahr, director for #SierraClub’s Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter. 'Gov. Hobbs can and should help shut down this mine as once the mine contaminates the groundwater, there is no way to clean it up. The best way to protect Grand Canyon and the people who depend on its waters is to move forward with closure of this mine.'

"The Pinyon Plain mine, which began extracting uranium ore on Jan. 8, [2024] is seven miles south of Grand Canyon National Park and inside the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Although President Biden’s national monument designation permanently bans new mining claims and development inside the monument, it exempts preexisting claims with valid existing rights like the Pinyon Plain uranium mine.

"'Neither industry nor regulators can guarantee that the Pinyon Plain uranium mine won’t irretrievably damage aquifers that feed Grand Canyon’s precious springs,' said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest director at the Center for Biological Diversity. 'That’s not a risk worth taking. At the Center we stand with the Havasupai Tribe asking Gov. Hobbs to close the mine now.'

"The petitions delivered to the governor by groups including the Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity, National Parks Conservation Association, #WildArizona, #ChispaArizona, and #HaulNo!, along with Tribal members, request that she 'do everything [she] can to help protect the waters of Grand Canyon, the new national monument, and these waters that are essential to the existence of the Havasupai people. GRAND CANYON, #Arizona — "#Conservation advocates will join Tribal leaders and members Saturday, Aug. 24, to demand the closure of the #PinyonPlain uranium mine that threatens the waters of the Grand Canyon and the #Havasupai Tribe.

What: Protest near #RedButte and the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine calling on #GovHobbs and federal officials to close the mine.

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24.

Where: Junction of Highway 64 and Forest Service Road 320, 10.5 miles north of Grand Canyon Junction (Valle, Arizona). Here is a map.

Who: Staff and members of the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, #SierraClub, #ChispaArizona, #WildArizona, National Parks Conservation Association [#NPCA] and other groups will join Havasupai Tribal leaders and members of other Tribes in solidarity and will be available for interviews.

"The mine, which began extracting uranium ore on Jan. 8, is 7 miles south of Grand Canyon National Park, at the foot of sacred Red Butte (Wii'i Gdwiisa in Havasupai), and inside the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.

"Saturday’s protest will come after weeks of recent actions opposing the mine and the hauling of radioactive #UraniumOre across the #NavajoNation, which has called the transportation of uranium across its land an infringement on Tribal sovereignty.

"Earlier this month Navajo Nation President #BuuNygren issued an executive order banning shipments of uranium from the mine across the Nation; hauling is now paused. Soon after Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes called for an updated environmental study on the mine, warning of potential risks of allowing the mine to proceed under the authority of a nearly 40-year-old Environmental Impact Statement.

"In June, Tribal members and conservation groups delivered a petition with more than 17,000 signatures urging Gov. Hobbs to use her authority to close the mine. In January, 80 groups and scientists called on her to do the same. New research indicates that the best way to protect the waters of the region is to shut down the mine."

GRAND CANYON, #Arizona — "#Conservation advocates will join Tribal leaders and members Saturday, Aug. 24, to demand the closure of the #PinyonPlain uranium mine that threatens the waters of the Grand Canyon and the #Havasupai Tribe.

What: Protest near #RedButte and the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine calling on #GovHobbs and federal officials to close the mine.

When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24.

Where: Junction of Highway 64 and Forest Service Road 320, 10.5 miles north of Grand Canyon Junction (Valle, Arizona). Here is a map.

Who: Staff and members of the #CenterForBiologicalDiversity, #SierraClub, #ChispaArizona, #WildArizona, National Parks Conservation Association [#NPCA] and other groups will join Havasupai Tribal leaders and members of other Tribes in solidarity and will be available for interviews.

"The mine, which began extracting uranium ore on Jan. 8, is 7 miles south of Grand Canyon National Park, at the foot of sacred Red Butte (Wii'i Gdwiisa in Havasupai), and inside the newly designated Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.

"Saturday’s protest will come after weeks of recent actions opposing the mine and the hauling of radioactive #UraniumOre across the #NavajoNation, which has called the transportation of uranium across its land an infringement on Tribal sovereignty.

"Earlier this month Navajo Nation President #BuuNygren issued an executive order banning shipments of uranium from the mine across the Nation; hauling is now paused. Soon after Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes called for an updated environmental study on the mine, warning of potential risks of allowing the mine to proceed under the authority of a nearly 40-year-old Environmental Impact Statement.

"In June, Tribal members and conservation groups delivered a petition with more than 17,000 signatures urging Gov. Hobbs to use her authority to close the mine. In January, 80 groups and scientists called on her to do the same. New research indicates that the best way to protect the waters of the region is to shut down the mine."

"On Saturday, August 10th, 5 p.m. Hopi / #Arizona Time (6 pm Navajo Nation/Tuba City time), Cloud Mountain Arts will host a five hour rockout/community educational event in opposition to #EnergyFuel’s hauling of radioactive material through the lands of #Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo, and #Ute Nations. The show will be held at the Legacy Room at the #Moencopi Legacy Inn in Tuba City and will feature performances by Indigenous musicians: Nava-Hopi metal sensation #IcyWhisper Official, Dine/Apache singer/songwriter #SageBond, Hopi rockers #Descendant and a special performance from #ROADKILL made up of members of #ThaYoties and #Innastate.

"A history of the #PuebloRevolt of 1680 will be shared, as well education about #UraniumMining and transport on #NativeLands of the #ColoradoPlateau with admonitions to stand together against the desecration of #IndigenousLands. Special Guests: Bucky Preston, Alicyn Gitlin and Coconino County Supervisor Lena Fowler.
