I didn't expect that the most surviving species after the #LaPalma volcano (#Canary Is) would be the #fig tree (#Ficus carica)! Their canopy (in green) emerge from ashes (most tree is below the ashes). #Pinus #canariensis in the background is not as healthy as the fig tree!.

Much of the fire affected a young plantation of #Pinus #uncinata (not native to the area; not sure why it was planted!) and #Betula. Betula individuals are now #resprouting, but most shrubs are not.

Here's an #iNaturalist NZ observation I made today for ANZAC Day.
It's a Turkish Red Pine, a descendant from Gallipoli of the famous Lone Pine. It was planted in Akaroa in 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.

Estimating the age of #mediterranean #pines & their #cones is tricky, as they often produce more than 1 whorl per year!
