"Most #CarnivorousPlants colonize wet, nutrient-poor habitats such as #bogs or #swamps. One of the few exceptions is the genus #Pinguicula... they thrive on rocky soils that are very dry for at least half of the year... Until now, it was unknown how the #plants compensate for the lack of water and still have enough to produce the sticky mucilage... in CAM, the stomata of the leaves remain closed during the day"

  5. I went to a rare plants event in Fuchū on the weekend and picked up this very cool Billbergia ‘Obi-Wan’.

The opposite hybrid (where the other variety is the pollen donor) is called ‘Darth Vader’.

Do they fight like betta fish if you put them next to each other? 🤔

I also got a new pinguicula to replace the one I killed earlier this year 😅

  11. Today in Meet The Pings, we have the first flower of the season!

Pinguicula blooms are small, on long stalks, and have long spurs. This one is a particularly lovely pink!

  12. Meet the Pings: pt 2 The Chonky Ones

these two are further on in coming out of dormancy, the first is working on a flower (which are gorgeous!), and the second has found some fungus gnats for a snack! For those that don’t lure in some noms (they have decimated the gnat pop in my office, as intended!!), i have fish flakes to sprinkle on their leaves!

  13. Meet The Pings! Pt 1: the tiny friends!

these are pinguicula just coming out of their winter dormancy, and working on growing bigger, sticky, carnivorous leaves, now that their winter dry period is over! I love how out of place the new leaves look, just sticking out the top! #pings #carniverousPlants #pinguicula #plants

  14. Yesterday's meeting of my orchid society was especially good and not just because one of my plants won a ribbon (see previous post) and we discussed the upcoming show. I got a #Dracunculus vulgaris and a #Pinguicula esseriana from one of my main plant swapping buddies; I got a starter colony of #Blaptica #dubia #roaches from another member; I picked up a #Crassula ovata, #Pachyphytum oviferum, and some sort of small #Haworthia from other members; and I sold an old glazed ceramic orchid pot.
