Pine Warbler in the Thicket

While I was clicking away at goldfinches, I happened to capture this image of a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) tucked in among them. I didn’t even notice the chubby little bird until I reviewed the shots later. It’s not unusual in winter to see a stray warbler mixed in with the goldfinches.

Feathered Whisper Among the Grass

Here is a Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) I spotted foraging on the ground. I often mistake these for goldfinches since they appear around the same time. At first, I even hoped it might be a Yellow Warbler, but the Pine Warbler’s distinctive yellow eye ring makes the identification clear.

Golden Gaze

Here’s an image of a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) perched on the roof of my old central bird feeder, gazing down toward the seed trough below—perhaps considering a seat at the table.

That feeder served faithfully for nearly twenty years. I kept patching it, season after season, coaxing a little more life from its weathered frame. Eventually, it gave out in a big way, and I replaced it a few months ago.

Golden Pine Warbler Moment

This morning, a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) paid a visit to the old bird feeder nestled in the heart of my backyard. While this is the best shot I managed to capture, I'm not especially fond of the scattered seeds in the background or the view through a smudged window.

Rustic Swing Feeder and Warbler

I usually put a few whole peanuts and some mealworms in the feeder. The birds I see at the feeder are blue jays and pine warblers (Setophaga pinus). I check the feeder now and then and usually find it empty. I hope that eastern bluebirds will come for the mealworms, but so far, I haven't seen any. That doesn't mean they aren't coming, but if they are, they do it when I'm not looking, which is most of the time.

Pine Warbler Close-Up

I saw this rather subdued looking pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) this morning. Perhaps it is an immature bird.

"A bird true to its name, the Pine Warbler is common in many eastern pine forests and is rarely seen away from pines. These yellowish warblers are hard to spot as they move along high branches to prod clumps of needles with their sturdy bills. If you don’t see them, listen for their steady, musical trill, which sounds very like a Chipping Sparrow or Dark-eyed Junco, which are also common piney-woods sounds through much of the year." - allaboutbirds.org

Fast Food

I had to run an errand yesterday, when I returned home, I noticed a bunch of small birds around, so I stopped in the middle of my driveway and grabbed my camera. Initially, I thought they were a flock of sparrow, then I thought that they were goldfinches, but they were pine warblers (Setophaga pinus). Most were in the trees, but these two were making an easy meal out of a run over acorn.

No Worries.

Ben, Charlie, and I had just gone through the backyard gate for our walk. I took a pair of work gloves because I intended to move some felled branches and a couple small trees. But as we rounded the house, I saw some birds filtering among trees in the front yard. So, I went back to get my camera. I was actually hoping to get a glimpse of hermit thrush or an American pipit, two species I know are around, but I haven't actually seen them. I took this photo of a bird in a tree; the original was quite dark. It turns out not to be either species. Instead, it is a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus).

Mealworm

Here is a mealworm in the clutches of a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus). Also at the bird feeder is a goldfinch with its back turned to the camera.

This pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) found a mealworm and is about to take it home.

"Pine Warblers eat mostly caterpillars and other arthropods (including beetles, grasshoppers, bugs, ants, bees, flies, cockroach eggs, and spiders), but they also eat fruits and seeds (notably, pine seeds) especially during the colder months. They mostly forage by hopping along branches in the middles and tops of pines—moving more slowly than most warblers—while picking food from bark and needles. They sometimes feed from deciduous trees during migration. Pine Warblers may also feed on the ground and catch insects in the air." - allaboutbirds.org

It must be yellow bird day. Here is a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) at one of my bird feeders.

Get Off My Lawn

I think that this photo is kind of interesting. I watched the whole scene unfold. A goldfinch tried to land at this bird feeder that was already occupied by a pine warbler. A brief dispute and a flattering of wings ensued, and the goldfinch left.

What the ...

I was outside with Charlie watching the birds. There were gobs of birds in the trees and shrubs in and surrounding our backyard. Most of the birds were goldfinches, but there were sparrows, chickadees, house finches, and tufted titmice as well. I saw a yellow bird visiting my swing feeder. I put both bird seed and mealworms in the feeder. Because of all the goldfinches around, I initially assumed it was one of those. But then I noticed it getting meal worms instead of sunflower seeds. You know, goldfinches are strictly vegetarian. I though it odd so I took a closer look, it was a pine warbler; there are several of those around as well and they blend in well with the gold finches.
