  1. [Thread] So, I've made #WhitePineNeedle tea to help shorten being sick with the flu. HOWEVER, there are caveats to using #PineNeedles, which I will post about in the thread...

#Maine pine needles yield valuable #Tamiflu material

Researchers at the University of Maine at Orono say they’ve found a new and relatively easy way to extract #ShikimicAcid – a key ingredient in the drug Tamiflu – from pine tree needles.

"A little-known raw material used in the most widely used antiviral flu medicine comes from the fruit of trees native to China. It turns out it also comes from pine trees in Maine’s backyard.

"Researchers at the University of Maine at Orono say they’ve found a new and relatively easy way to extract shikimic acid – a key ingredient in the drug Tamiflu – from pine tree needles.

"It remains to be seen if the process can be applied commercially. The extract could be valuable because Tamiflu is the world’s most widely used antiviral drug for treating the flu.

"The major source of shikimic acid now is the star anise, an unusual star-shaped fruit that grows on small trees native to China."

  2. Some more lichens among the pine needles. Also present: partridgeberry leaves and berries (Mitchella repens) and wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens).

  3. "Lots More Pine Needles To Pick Up" teableau for 09/12/24

(That was the refrain of my childhood, and my brother's).

If you zoom in, you'll see a tiny jumping spider inside the cup. Serendipity. Dad loved spiders.

  4. Pine cones never cease to amaze me. They go through seemingly endless transformations, handling each of their many stages of change and growth with such grace. Truly an inspiration.

I saw this one yesterday when I went #foraging for #pineneedles. The sun highlighted it for me, a picture-perfect moment despite the strong wind! The snow we got is finally melting away. It feels like spring is just around the corner with how everything's starting to thaw. It's been a strange, heavy winter this time around. Sometimes we need help seeing and pivoting our attention accordingly. I know #witchcraft is seasonal for others too, as it is for me.

The colours almost remind me of a mango. Bright and shining. 🥭

As for the #pine needles, I made jelly with them, adding in #homemade tangerine 🍊 jam for their immune boosting effects. Aside from The Virus, there's a lot of flus and other such nasties going about, and while we still mask, it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

I place great trust in my #plantmedicine. Continuing #herbalism the way my #Ancestors have been practicing it is such a blessing. It's what inspired me to start creating content online in the first place, wanting to share the joy and love I have for my culture and to help foreigners approach #hellenicpolytheism and #greekculture respectfully and in an educated manner.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank those of you who take a moment to interact with my posts here! It's encouraging me to share more.
