  1. Upgraded my Pinebook Pro to Fedora 44 🎉

The process went smoothly. Thanks @fedora for their great work!

  2. Je mrtvý, Dejve.
Pinebook Pro vypadá, že po 6 letech už má dost. Během rutinního rebootu se neprobudil 😔

  8. probably the last picture of this pinebook pro setup before i do some crazy things to it

  9. Replacing libarm64ecfex and libwow64fex with the ones from Hangover project finally made Wine i386/x86_64 emulation working.

Sounds like the libraries from Fedora's COPR is broken.

  10. got openmpt to run on the #pinebookpro

i can finally learn to chipping on the go :blobcatsunglasses:

  11. I'm still using my #PinebookPro . It's not that fast but enough for many tasks.

  12. @Zenie @peteorrall

I daily-drove a #PinebookPro (ARM-based) for four years, and it definitely had some frustrations.

I was happier with Armbian than Manjaro, I think, for stability reasons alone.

  13. i3 běží 🥳
WiFi běží, ještě zbývá naučit se milion věcí jinak 😄

  15. This past week I thought I had run into just a transient fluke with my #Armbian #Ubuntu #PinebookPro, but it turned out to be a bigger issue.

I'm hoping to fix this. Details in link below (mine is the first reply in the thread; not the post). If you have ideas, please feel free to reply either here or there. Thank you!

  16. Just verified the current #wmlive version for arm64 boots just fine on a #PinebookPro, thanks to #towboot enabling UEFI booting. This also includes the graphical Debian installer, so no more fiddling with the serial console.

  17. @hellomiakoda @ramin_hal9001 @nonehitwonder

I had an ARM laptop: A #PinebookPro. I mean, I still have it, but it's in a state of relative disrepair.
On the pros, the physical hardware was amazingly nice for the price ($220), and it gave me at least four years of really great use.
But the drivers kinda sucked, the kernel wasn't mainline, just the typical litany of #ARM pain points. XD

  18. RE: indieweb.social/@data0/1126312

@nobodyinperson Sorry to hear! Reminds me of an issue I had with the #PinebookPro. I semi-bricked it by installing Manjaro. But it only seemed dead. In reality, it was (probably) stuck trying to load the bootloader and draining the battery below safe levels in doing so, eventually killing it. Luckily the battery came back to life somewhat after leaving it on the charger for a while and doing a few charging cycles.

  19. Updated my #PinebookPro to #Fedora 43! This is my first major release upgrade on my laptop and it went very well.

Thanks @fedora and contributors for making it happen!

  20. Here it is on my #PinebookPro!

There is video cache on this platform, so video_sync() needs to be called every time.

Maybe I should not switch to 8x16 on the second screen too early (the content stays on screen even if you change the font) and that would be nicer.

  21. Are you an #Armbian developer or contributor?

You rock. You make my #PinebookPro a joy to work with.

  22. I know I'm a #LaptopAddict, guys...

But I'm actually thinking about buying a super-cheap HP Stream 11 when they go on sale in a month or two to have an always-on-the-go cheap-and-light laptop with me at all times to use my phone a lot less. XD

    Basically, it's a modern #NetBook. :D

(And it's actually a bit lighter than the #PinebookPro, though not the original #Pinebook, which is no longer for sale)

Any other recommendations for a cheap, stupidly-light, touch-typeable laptop?

  23. Trying to run the #clang test suite on my #PinebookPro with #NetBSD to verify a pull request.
The poor notebook is really struggling. 4G of RAM plus 8G of swap is barely enough (or not) for a single linker invocation. Oof.

  24. Now testing a fresh install #Debian 13 on a #PinebookPro, previously to get this to work some manual intervention was required, let's see if I can just do it directly now

  25. @linmob @danct12 @driftini @PINE64 I tried to download Manjaro for the #pinephone but found just beta releases from march 2024😮 at github using the links for stable versions on the #pine64 wiki page
    wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone
Is that the version that is shipped with the pinephone?
I know that #manjaroarm is not supported for my #pinebookpro anyway
    😞
I use #armbian on it instead. Works fine.

  30. Folks running #postmarketOS on the #PinebookPro, I'm thinking about requiring Tow-Boot[1][2]for booting the OS so we can EFI boot and use a current kernel[3]. Your response here will be very helpful 😀

    1. tow-boot.org/

    2. Or any u-boot build w/ EFI enabled, the main thing is we would stop embedding u-boot in pmOS images so you have to flash *something*

    3. gitlab.postmarketos.org/postma

  31. Was thinking of getting a bigger #eMMC module for my #PinebookPro, but the one that was recommended was $50 for 256GiB which is a little... ridiculous.

I think I'm just going to wipe the 60GiB stock eMMC with #pmOS, fix up the loose screws, and get a 256GB microSDXC card for extra storage.

  32. Thinking of trying #postmarketOS on my #PinebookPro.

I didn't even know you could run it as a desktop OS.

Supposedly the installer supports #FullDiskEncryption, which is... "poggers," I think the kids say.

    #pmOS #FDE

  33. Just dug out my old . It's so far out of date it'll probably be faster to just backup the files and start it from scratch. It still has an old install of on it.

  34. @rl_dane Which version of #armbian do you use ?
The installation to internal storage completes without error, but it doesn't boot with error "mmc boot failed"
Regardless which image I use. I think the install script is broken, at least for my #pinebookpro
#manjaroarm is dead (no updates, Wifi doesn't work) #armbian is dead (doesn't boot from eMMC) on my #pinebookpro
    #distrohopping at its worst.

  39. That was my last version of #manjaroarm on the #pinebookpro .
No updates for about one year, switched to unstable branch, updated 925 packages and after reboot the Wifi didn't work any more.
The error message says: "No password specified" although the password is given.
I will try #voidlinux instead, so I do no longer care about #manjaroarm .
It was a mistake buying the #pinebookpro .

  44. I know I've publicly complained about what a pain is as a platform for open devices (from the perspective of an end user/normie), but I can't help but hope that @PINE64 comes out with a new (The is now a little over five years old).

This little device has its flaws, but I can't get over:
    * The price (< 220 USD)
    * The weight (1.2kg)
    * The screen (14" 1080p IPS)
    * The keyboard (one of the best laptop keyboards I've ever used)

    ... 1/2

    pineWintermute broke down again.
Broken #inodes. Of course I was too lazy to prepare my own #microSD card with a #ManjaroLive for #ARM system.
Be patient my dear until this evening in the nearest #hackerspace Ruum42.ch.

  46. "Look on my LCD, ye mighty, and despair!!"
    -- My , probably

    PBP is back, baby!

I found a set of laptop screws on that not only fit the holes at the top (hinge-side) perfectly, the head of the screws are bigger than stock, so it holds the bottom plate (with its now-enlarged screw holes) in place, anchoring the hinge properly.

It's back!!! I'm typing on it now!! WOO HOOO!!!!!

  47. Wow, the @PINE64 turns five in late July.

My own unit turned three quite recently.

    I wonder if there's a 3 in the works 😁

  48. After some more debugging, here are two videos proving that #gtk4 / #GStreamer video playback with fullscreen GL/VK overlay works on a #RaspberryPi4 and #PinebookPro / #rk3399 on #weston / #Wayland, each maxing out their video decoders with 1080p@60 and 4k@60 respectively.

The message here is: no matter what hardware - if you want to make a video/camera app that needs to be highly efficient, you can do it with a proper, yet still lightweight toolkit now. No need for a custom kms/drm backend.
