  1. @samhenrigold love this feeling. I'm having it myself with a $200 secondhand #Pinebook Pro that I got to see what I could do with my intermediate Linux knowledge on a bare bones #ARM machine.

I've been running a tiling window manager, managing all of my homelab servers over SSH, using #GnuIMP just like I did on laptops from ~15 years ago to make wallpapers for my jailbroken #kindle

Not every machine needs to be able to do everything. Especially now with prices on the rise.

  2. If only my #pinebook charged at night instead of draining the battery I could watch the stream live. Are there any powersockets somewhere at #ULB?

    And, unrelated: Is @pine64 here?

    #fosdem

  3. I know I'm a #LaptopAddict, guys...

But I'm actually thinking about buying a super-cheap HP Stream 11 when they go on sale in a month or two to have an always-on-the-go cheap-and-light laptop with me at all times to use my phone a lot less. XD

    Basically, it's a modern #NetBook. :D

(And it's actually a bit lighter than the #PinebookPro, though not the original #Pinebook, which is no longer for sale)

Any other recommendations for a cheap, stupidly-light, touch-typeable laptop?

  4. Where do I find this “#PINEBOOK Pro M.2/NGFF NVMe SSD Interface Adapter”? Since #pine64 is always out of stock..

  5. the @PINE64 pinebook looks really cool
(ok, I don't need a new laptop right now, but in general)

But, as long as it doesn't have a trackpoint like the ThinkPads have, I guess I will never get one

  10. @krishnadraws

Not snapdragon, but I use an ARM-based laptop, the #Pinebook Pro.

Honestly, Linux on ARM is kinda aggravating. So much stuff just assumes you're running x86_64.

The only way I'd recommend it is if you were using a source-based distro like Gentoo.

  11. Ok, #lazyweb : I have an #arm / #arm64 question for y’all. What’s your favorite #linux distro for desktop use? I’m targeting an older #pinebook pro that I had to wipe, as well as a couple of Raspberry Pi (and similar) machines for a school library makerspace

    So priorities are:

    • runs XFCE or KDE,
    • well-maintained package repo for arm ports,
    • default install is fairly minimal but useable.

I had been happy with Manjaro for my own uses, but I think it’s probably too fussy for a librarian to maintain.

  12. I know I've publicly complained about what a pain is as a platform for open devices (from the perspective of an end user/normie), but I can't help but hope that @PINE64 comes out with a new (The is now a little over five years old).

This little device has its flaws, but I can't get over:
    * The price (< 220 USD)
    * The weight (1.2kg)
    * The screen (14" 1080p IPS)
    * The keyboard (one of the best laptop keyboards I've ever used)

    ... 1/2

  13. @CNET I've personally had great experiences with Pocketbook #eReaders, especially because they offer excellent text-to-speech (#TTS) functions and support a wide range of formats. On the other hand, Amazon eReaders are not an option for me, as I prefer to have full control over my reading choices. nytimes.com/2009/07/18/technol

I have one more question: do you have any tips for open-source and #FOSSfriendly eBook readers, aside from the #Pinebook by #PINE64? I’d love to hear your recommendations!

  14. I just installed #netbsd on my #pinebook pro and I am not really sure where to start here. I managed to get the wifi working and I guess I have to use cvs to bootstrap pkgsrc? #bsd

  15. Wow, the @PINE64 turns five in late July.

My own unit turned three quite recently.

    I wonder if there's a 3 in the works 😁

  16. And anyone else running some sort of #BSD on a #pinebook to be fair. Any help/info is appreciated!

  17. Apart from wanting a Framework laptop I’m also really curious to play with some ARM hardware to run #Linux on. Like a #Pinephone or #Pinebook or #RaspberryPi400 🤔

  23. @cmccullough @Vivaldi Oh sweet! Haven't really looked into it, I honestly am really digging how #Windows11 functions on it, but I spent a lot of time using #Ubuntu, #MEPIS, #etc. back when Windows Virus (Vista) came out, until like 2015 (16? 17?), when I moved back to using Windows as my primary personals.

I have a #PineBook (been there, unused, for like 4+ years) on one of my shelves, but I need to reimage it as I borked it by trying to mod the #kernel (if memory serves) of the pre-loaded OS.

  28. Ok, so Ive had my #PineBook Pro for almost a week now, and I'll be completely honest, it's fucking #brilliant!

While there are definitely shortcomings, I can see myself using this as my daily driver for the foreseeable future. Here are the good and bad points I've come up with so far.

    The Good:

    - Screen #resolution and sharpness is awesome
    - #Keyboard has excellent travel and key rebound, and practically no deck flex
    - #Charging over USB-C makes for amazing #versatility. I can charge it with my Phone Battery Bank
    - The outer shell is strong and is beautifully simple
    - It's so slim and small, it fits in the Tablet pocket of my backpack
    - The passive cooling never makes the base too hot to touch
    - It's more than #powerful enough to write #documents and #spreadsheets on
    - #Video in #Firefox is fine, but anything over 480p starts dropping frames
    - Writing documents will only sip at the #battery, making it last for hours upon hours
    - #Syncing with the #PinePhone via #KDE Connect works pretty well

    The Bad:

    - The plastic surround of the screen feels loose and bends easily
    - The plastic deck heats up quickly just from body heat, and makes your hands feel sweaty
    - The keyboard isn't exactly aligned, and a couple of the arrow keys catch on the deck, making it feel like the keys are stuck
    - The #webcam has no software controls, and is very dark. If you increase the brightness, or shine a light on your subject, it works, but saturation is far too low. Driver issue maybe?
    - Video in Firefox can drain the battery very quickly
    - #Graphics #corruption can get quite annoying on the default #Manjaro #ARM #KDE edition, be sure to install #mesa-git, but it only marginally improves the situation

    Conclusion:

If you're #writing a ton, like scripts; articles; reviews; websites etc, it is the perfect portable #tool, with a comfortable keyboard, and all the utils you need to get going.

If you're writing web #code like HTML and CSS, it would also work out really well as a tool to take with you to clients, or on the road.

This is great way to get your thoughts out and into the digital realm. It might be a great utility for accessing #Social #Media, Chat protocols like #XMPP and #Matrix, or just doing online tasks.

For its price, it has already proven its worth to me, I do NOT regret my purchase. #PineTime is on the way! w00t!

  30. Does anyone have a #starlabs #system76 #tuxedo #pinebook pro laptop? I am interested to know about the hardware experience. I was thinking about getting one to run #manjaro #Linux. I just gave my #Lenovo #t470 to a friend in need. and am now missing a personal thin and light for writing in #VIM, doing light #Blender and #freecad
