  1. @mathaetaes

    So much for #duolingo

maybe #Pimsleur , #RosettaStone or ThomasMann are better

I never wanted to learn Korean anyways
    :bun:

  2. #subscriptions are getting seriously out of hand.

Even the language learning program #Pimsleur has gotten into the insanity.
For "only" $20 you can access any of the language courses.

Uh... just how many languages is a single person interested in actually learning? Of course, you can get a subscription with just one language... for $19. XD

You used to be able to buy individual courses for $49, and listen to them at your own pace indefinitely. No more.

I mean, $20/mo is theoretically a great deal for the voracious learner. But for the casual learner, it feels like a rip-off.

  3. Listening to #Pimsleur language lessons in audiobook from the library to refresh my high school and college French. I'm more than a little skeeved out by lesson 9 having a man keep trying to ask a woman out after she has told him no and also that she's married. She keeps having to say no with greater emphasis. Possibly useful but also ick. You shouldn't have to get all the way to "absolument pas."

  4. Update: So far, #Pimsleur seems to be satisfying the main criterion of being primarily audio based. I will more than likely be supplementing some of these other suggestions to enhance the experience as I grow more advanced. The feedback to this thread has been wonderful and is still welcome if anyone has more suggestions that haven't been mentioned here. Thank you so much for the support! #Blind #Language #Learning #French #Technology #Screenreader

  5. For traveling, I like to be able to order off the menu in the native language. I got sick of #Duolingo's gamification and tried #Pimsleur for French. That's what I'd use if I were spending significant time there: Pimsleur is hard but no nonsense. I'm now on #Babbel but it's even easier than Duolingo and doesn't feel like I'm advancing at all. I might go back to Duolingo and submit to the gamification. Thoughts?

  6. Musing on learning a new #language...

I've been using #Pimsleur and I can speak basic #Mandarin fairly well now, took about three months - no assignments, no interactivity, no accounts, no nothing, just audio files. Remarkably effective for what it is.

Language courses still seem pretty unpredictable - I know people who have become pretty fluent from cassette tapes, as well as people who have been taking Spanish classes for a year and can only just about ask for directions and order food.

And all the #Duolingo users I know are always going on about challenges and being in the top x% but they can't form a single usable sentence in whatever language they're learning. I've never used it but to me it comes off as more of a game than an actual learning experience.

  7. @Anjicello
I only have my own experience to report. I've gone through several different language courses using #Pimsleur and #Duolingo. I've noticed no difference between focusing on one language for a while or mixing it up. Your brain will sort it out.

  8. Pimsleur teach speech/topics that don't center around a straight man who is traveling for business with a wife and kids back home challenge: IMPOSSIBLE.

    🙃🙃🙃

After finishing this course, I'm so done using their program. Just like Duo, they're overrated at this point.

  9. @cedled I don't have mp3s 😂 Saka, the iphone already has #pimsleur Japanese audio lessons so very limited na storage space. I was just asking if it's worth it to jailbreak or just use it like a basic phone with an awesome camera.

  10. Going to take another shot at verbal language learning, hopefully I can piece some things together in time for a trip later this year. We'll see if 's method clicks with the brain over here.

  11. Io sono americano. Io capisco un po l’italiano. :)

  12. My brother was assuring me that I can do my language walking/learning in the gym. That he does his language studies on the bus murmuring to himself, but I just feel self-concious. When I'm walking on trails: 1. thoughts will pop into my head so it's good for creativity. 2. I don't feel awkward pronouncing things in #German or whatever language I'm studying. Would you like something to drink? No, I would like something to eat x 20. #Pimsleur #LanguageLearning #Deutsch
