  1. CLASSy -- Tear Drop -- SBS 260719
    youtu.be/dLI56qLFlko?si=vk-cc5

I'm posting this "Tear Drop" stage less because of the song, which is neither terrible nor particularly memorable, but on account of its providing me with an opportunity to write a few words about hats in Kpop performances.

This stage show one idol wearing a cap and another in a pillbox hat. I strongly prefer the latter to the former. For me, the pillbox communicates elegance and style, whereas the cap evokes the everyday world of running errands on a bad hair day.

Although I have never and will never wear a cap like this, I can understand the cap's practical appeal. Yet this down to earth practicality damns this headwear style for me when it comes to styling for the Kpop stage.

I want a stage by virtue of song, dance, and styling to enchant me by dispelling the humdrum quotidian if only for a few minutes. The cap, with its suggestion of the casual and the careless does the very opposite. The pillbox casts a spell; the cap breaks it.

    #ScribesAndMakers 11.29 — Cantankerous?

It was interesting how my view of Emily had changed. At first, I had found her humorless and grouchy, almost #cantankerous. She was definitely serious, but she had a humorous side and was perfectly capable of engaging in verbal sparring.

She was a bit sadistic too. I could tell by the way her lips turned up in a smile as I pushed my way through the thick forest growth, and by her uproarious laughter when a #pillbox-shaped bug as big as my fist caused me to shriek in surprise.

We eventually reached the “trail,” a muddy, trampled swath of land that ambled through the forest. Fallen trees littered the path, and huge footprints lurked in the dense ferns, threatening to break the legs of the unwary. The expedition clothes I had manifested soon turned into leather chaps and a jacket. Despite the heat, it was better than being #rent by the long dagger-like thorns that hid amid the foliage.

My attempts to transform my clothes into futuristic lightweight armor were a flop. There were clearly limits to my power. As an experiment, I tried to manifest money and then a gun. Again, the experiments failed. I had better luck with manifesting a machete.

My woes weren't limited to the heat and flora. Clouds of gnats followed me. A safari hat with mosquito netting helped, but hindered my movement through the brush. The machete and short stints of immateriality were helpful, but tiring. Indiana Jones, I wasn’t.

  4. It is 80 years ago today since this structure on a beach near where I live in North East England officially became surplus to requirements. Thank God the threat of invasion never materialised.
I often wonder how my parents, who hadn't then met, spent VE Day. It was a question I never thought to ask. For dad, it must have seemed something of a bittersweet moment, being as he was, posted out to the Far East. At the time, still not quite out of his teens, I understand he had played some part in early 1945 in the Battle of the Ramree Islands in Burma (now Myanmar) against the Japanese.
It would be another three months before VJ Day, seeing the end of the war in the Pacific and the complete cessation of global hostilities.

  5. 25/02/2024 - A trip to the sea today. Sunny and peaceful walk in the dunes to the trig. Then along the cliffs to the bay for a sit and tea. The sun set and the moon rose. We walked back along the beach by moonlight. A nice visit with lots of birds about and very little humans. A couple of pairs of fulmars back on the cliff which was great to see.

  6. 11/02/2024 - Afternoon walk after a rainy morning wait. Bus out and a slow walk home. It was a bit grey but mainly dry. Along quiet roads. The rivers were high and the surrounding fields looked muddy. Not many birds about, probably favourite seen was a lovely Reed Bunting. We popped into the ice cream shop on the way back. Dark by the time we got home. Wish it wasn't Monday tomorrow.
