  2. Pileated Woodpecker

    > "A big, dashing bird with a flaming crest, the Pileated Woodpecker is the largest extant woodpecker in North America"
    - National Audubon Society

These birds bore deep into dead trees to feast on carpenter ants, which are quite abundant here.

  4. I came across this very weird death yesterday in Gatineau Park, Quebec. It appears that this Pileated died while sitting on the tree and stayed stuck there. It's been very cold so maybe he froze? But what was he doing there? It's a strange place to hunker down for a cold night.

  6. Photography is Like a Box of Chocolates

I saw this pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) pass overhead one morning. At the time, I didn’t know what it was—just a bird cutting across the sky. That’s often how it goes when I photograph birds in flight: I capture the moment first, identify the species later. I’m fairly certain there were two of them. I missed the shot when the first one flew by, but I know there’s a mated pair living somewhere in the woods behind my house. This one looks like a female.

  7. Red Crest Rising

This is a male pileated woodpecker—a photograph I took a few months back. I caught a glimpse of a pair just yesterday; they touched down briefly in a nearby pine before continuing westward. That’s how most forest birds travel: small, cautious hops from tree to tree. I suppose it’s safer that way.

  9. Hidden in the Thicket

Charlie and I set out again this morning, and about halfway through our walk, we spotted a male pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) hammering away at an old tree near a quiet city street. I couldn’t get a clear shot at first, but the bird lingered just long enough for me to adjust my shutter speed and aperture to work around the tangle of branches. When he finally took off, he flew across the street and perched briefly in the open—just long enough to tease me, but not long enough for me to get my camera in position.
