“Wall Street Has Long Fingers.” Piggly-Wiggly founder Clarence Saunders in 1923 placed full-page ads in newspapers including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in a desperate attempt to stop the bear raid on his company. The New York Stock Exchange sided with the bears, and Saunders, one of retail’s greatest innovators, was forced to turn everything — including his Memphis mansion, the Pink Palace — over to creditors.
