"Matinée in Arcachon," Pierre Bonnard, c.1930.
Bonnard (1867-1947) is one of my favorites, and a part of my favorite school of art, the Nabis. The Nabis were postimpressionists who believed that art could be pleasant and decorative, incorporated into everyday life, and were big believers in intimate scenes.
This is actually pretty unusual for Bonnard, as he loved doing interiors and small scenes, or paintings of his beloved wife Marthe; he's not much for landscapes. But here he's giving us a lovely seascape, depicting the morning sky over the Atlantic near the town of Arachon.
There's the barest suggestion of a shoreline at the bottom, but the rest of the canvas is divided equally between the sea and the morning sky. ("Matinee" here refers to morning, not a daytime film showing!) Sailboats are already going out to see, presumedly to fish, and the unseen sun is touching the clouds on the horizon with its colors.
A nice view for a summer's day, eh? Bonnard didn't paint from the life; he would either sketch or take a photograph, but this captures the moment quite well.

I wish I had this in higher resolution...
I think this level of impressionism is maybe as far as you can go and still create something based in reality. I really like this for as long as I can appreciate it as a whole, the color and the energy, it seems like people milling around buying things in the late afternoon.
But, when I try to examine it, I get really frustrated at not being able to understand any details. I got to point where I thought it was garbage for a minute, but I came back to liking it when I looked away and looked back. 🤔

"Work Table," Pierre Bonnard, 1926/37.
I love Bonnard, and I love the Nabis.
The Nabis, if you've missed my gushing about them before, were an art movement that was a transition from Impressionism to more modern, abstract art. The Nabis were also fond of intimate scenes of everyday life and objects, just as they are, and presented with loving care and focus.
I love this work table, scattered with books and papers, and the cat and dog sitting on the couch. Bonnard began this painting in 1926, but then revisited it in 1937 to fine-tune the rosettes on the rug, which is why it has such an odd date.
A work table like this is a sign of an active and busy mind, right?

"A Plate of Strawberries," Pierre Bonnard, 1922.
Bonnard (1867-1947) was a Nabi, so by default he's one of my favorite artists. And here he gives us a great example of Nabi art at its best, an intimate everyday scene depicted with great care to the point it seems of cosmic importance. Here, it's just a simple plate of strawberries on a white tabletop.
Spring is getting ready to knock down the door and force its way in here...and strawberry season won't be far behind...
