  2. I really love these vintage Justin pewter pins inspired by Pictish stone carvings. I offer them in the shop whenever I can find them. We scour the islands and beyond for lovely vintage finds. Actually before I made jewellery by hand, I specialised in sourcing and valuing vintage pieces! You can find some great vintage in our shop right now along side pieces I've designed and made by hand. #vintage #celtic #Pictish #brooch

  3. Changeable weather at Broomend of Crichie complex near Inverurie for today's #StandingStoneSunday

A Neolithic henge (a circular earthwork with an external ditch) contains the remains of a stone circle. Two stones remain, the third is a carved Pictish symbol stone that was moved into the site later. There is also an avenue and various outlying stones.

    Visited April 2012.

  5. The original, non-glitched version will be available this week as well if it's of interest 🤓. I'm also working on making my dataset available to the public (it's currently handwritten in my notebooks). #dataVisualization #archaeology #symbols #Pictish

  11. We have had our annual monitoring day today, where we log and photograph the conditions of all of the assets in our care at the Wemyss coast.
Caves, paths (not the Fife Coastal Path) and carvings.
And the weather was mostly wonderful, although the most recent storms have made the paths pretty tricky to navigate in places.
Looking forward to welcome visitors back for tours from the 7th April!

  13. The Cravahnkin inhabit the great forests that swathe across the land. The lorespinners tell tales of how they were once human; the wyrdweavers posit that they still are...

  16. Great tour day. Interested (and interesting!) visitors, the weather held up, and the dog behaved.
A whole bunch of them came back to the visitor centre and we spent another wee while chatting.

Our tours are free of charge, you can book your spaces via Eventbrite. eventbrite.co.uk/e/wemyss-cave

  17. Tried my hand at embroidery for the first time, to provide a Pictish symbol for an early medieval costume I'm making. It isn't perfect but it looks the part I think. #embroidery #Pictish #Picts #Scotland #EarlyMedieval

  18. It's tour day on the Wemyss foreshore!
Our tours are fully booked for today, but if you come to our visitor centre on The Haugh in East Wemyss you can visit our wee museum on the caves and other local history.
If we do have anyone who doesn't turn up for the booked tour, we will do our best to accommodate you. But we can't promise. 😔

  20. Modern-day Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish people found to have #Pictish ancestry

“The #Picts of #Scotland who have long intrigued and have been ascribed exotic origins in fact descended from indigenous Iron Age society and were genetically most similar to people living today in Scotland, Wales, North Ireland and Northumbria.”

  25. During yesterday's road trip I ended up doing some #Pictish stone captures en route including the seriously odd Class II cross slab at Migvie. The cross and three symbols are now clear as is the possibly reworked horseman on the back.#StandingStoneSunday #earlymediaeval

  26. From my paper in "Able Minds and Practised Hands", this is a #3d #laserscan from 2002 of St. Orland's Stone, a #Pictish #earlymediaeval cross slab. How to make carvings clearer by stopping the sun's ability to cast shadows! 😃

  29. For #HillfortsWednesday.
From 2005, our #3d #laserscan of the #Pictish carvings on bedrock at Trusty's Hill. These carvings are outliers and quite odd. They do feature the unique "deely-bopper" symbol, though!
The nearby Anwoth Church and schoolhouse were in The Wicker Man movie.

  37. Introduction time!
We are SWACS, short for 'Save the Wemyss Ancient Caves', the custodians for a number of sandstone #caves on the #Fife coast which are home to some unique #LocalHeritage.

We have a vast collection of #Pictish designs carved directly into the walls, as well as possible #BronzeAge cup marks, and #graffiti likely from all ages.
