Well, I already started playing with it but mostly because I was interested in understanding LoRa’s capabilities… I have been playing with offline-first, self-hosted, low power servers with #PicoGopher some time ago and I always wondered whether it’d be possible to sync small websites or gopherholes with it.

It took a while, but my gemini server for #PicoGopher is out!

This is heavily inspired by Solderpunk's GeGoBi (https://git.sr.ht/~solderpunk/gegobi) and allows you to share BOTH capsules AND gopheroles via #GeminiProtocol ✨

The code is still a mess, but it was too cool not to share it! The merit goes to Solderpunk of course, while the mess is 100% my fault 😉

First #oldcomputerchallenge year for me and I am fashionably late with a live Knoppix 3.7 running on my Travelmate 514TXV. The Mozilla browser version dates back to 2004, which made me confident it still supported #gopher 🙂

The Netgear 802.11b pcmcia card 😅 could not connect to my AP so I used a #PicoGopher as an AP (did anyone say DIY?) and connected to both its gopher and its HTTP server with lynx and Mozilla.

This was fun, and a great way to spend my latest merged-PR endorphins 😁

This weekend I played with PG's gemini plugin so I could serve gwit sites while offline. I relied on solderpunk's GeGoBi (https://tildegit.org/solderpunk/gegobi) for the gemini server implementation, as I liked the idea of it being able to seamlessly serve gopherholes too 💙
Due to pico restrictions + lack of libs I had to simplify it quite a bit, but gemini seems easier to serve than gopher (if we ignore SSL...🤦‍♂️ which works great now!)

#PicoGopher updates:

- I refactored the WiFi module so you can now choose whether to connect PG to an existing network or run as an AP

- when the battery voltage goes too low, PG goes into low-power deep sleep and periodically wakes up to check whether it has been recharged. Now you can leave your solar powered PG alone for much longer.. And this summer you'll forget about them ;-)

@MattHodges I created #PicoGopher 🙂, a tiny #gopher server running on a #RasPi pico! I feel it is still quite far from being complete, but I am already quite proud of it ❤️

The more I think about what the best next step for #PicoGopher could be, the more I believe implementing some decentralised protocol to exchange info would be super useful: what is more decentralised than a bunch of personal servers people can physically bring around with them? 🙂

For this reason, I find any effort into implementing parts of #ActivityPub on small devices super interesting!

Hi everyone!
I know I promised a #PicoGopher update by the weekend. The bad news is I got flu and I cannot look at a screen for more than a few minutes before my head goes 🤯😔
The good news is that I used this time to build a few prototypes, powered by:
- 3xAAA rechargeable batteries
- a Li-ion battery recharged using Pico LiPo
- one recharged using #adafruit ‘s solar charger 🤩

#PicoGopher v1.0 is released! This version adds an HTTP endpoint and has been demoed on a super compact, albeit a bit bomb-looking, prototype powered by 3xAAA batteries 🙂
