  1. Despite my extremely low expectations of the appointment at the GP surgery this morning it was very useful.

It was with a physiotherapist as I feared, but ... he did some diagnostic tests on my hands which have never been done before and confirmed the arthritis but also diagnosed 'De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis' which is an issue with the tendons from the thumb up the arm towards the elbow.

He's given me a series of exercises and advised me to use my thumb & wrist splint more.

He thinks it might take a few months to completely settle down.

At least I know what it is, and what to do about it.

  3. A rare #work post from me, in the theme of #GetFediHired — with the caveat it is #Cambridge (UK) based, just outta town, in a beautiful spot in Comberton (4 days in office, Wednesday WfH and an annual allocation of ad-hoc WfH days.)

Our core work is #Python ( #django ) with #Typescript ( #solidjs ) at the front end, there's some #Rust floating about too (but it's not a big part of things).

#Job roles in #software, #physiotherapy, regulatory, and more : Flok Health Jobs

News: $12.5m Series A funding round

And for the Fedi audience: It says AI a lot, which has its uses... our core tech is not GenAI and isn't burning the planet down any more than tech in general. Our stuff just runs on a normal server, no GPUs!

As devs here we are under no pressure to use GenAI tools... though the option is there, with very careful safeguarding. (At core we have a regulated medical device, we do not play "vibe coding" games with this stuff.)

  7. Integrating Western Rehab & Eastern Wisdom. 🤖🏮

What makes this more than just a massage bed is its intelligent integration of exoskeleton robotic technology and #Physiotherapy. It operates on the principle of Spinal Dynamic Balance through:

1️⃣ -10 Degree Traction: Restoring the "Jelly Donuts" (discs) in the cervical and lumbar spine by reducing joint pressure

2️⃣ Five Elements Music: Using specific sonic frequencies to harmonize the internal organs (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and soothe the mind

3️⃣ Far-Infrared Therapy: Boosting microcirculation to "melt" dampness in the lungs and enhance immunity

4️⃣ Sequential Air Pressure: Fully automated massage from the neck to the feet to relieve muscle tension.

When the spine finds its center, the heart finally feels safe enough to let go. I walked away feeling lighter, clearer, and finally—liberated. This tech is a game-changer for mind--body health, insomnia, and spinal alignment. ⚖️🌬️

  10. Hey, keep doing your physio exercises!

I had shoulder surgery on 17th April 2024, and had fortnightly physio for 6 weeks post surgery.

I kept up with my exercises afterwards, and have continued doing them for the past 18-ish months.

AND TODAY I PUT MY BRA ON THE WAY I USED TO BEFORE MY INJURY*

It can be really discouraging to be doing physio exercises for soooo long without seeing improvements, but they ARE helping. I promise!

    * doing it up behind me, instead of doing it in front and spinning it around.

  13. Just home from the physio & my back feels great again now. The procedure isn’t really pleasant with the kneading into my muscles & the dry needling - I do tend to grunt a bit 😏, but it definitely makes a difference afterwards. Hope it lasts. #Physiotherapy #Health

  14. I’m home from the physiotherapist & while my back is still a little achy it’s definitely not as tense or tight. I can’t honestly say I enjoy the dry needling but in conjunction with a bit of a massage it works quite well. May need to have a repeat next week & will know where I’m at in the next day or two. #Health #Injury #Physiotherapy.

  16. A big shout out to all physiotherapists. True, caring geniuses that really know their trade and understand that, if it can be avoided, medication isn't the long-term answer to musculoskeletal problems and their associated pain. 🙏

  22. So, yesterday was my first day of #rehabilitation #clinic for #LongCovid . My gosh there's so much therapy #ErgoTherapy , #physiotherapy , #psychotherapy , optiohal #arttherapy or #musictherapy . When I'm done here I'll need #therapy for all the therapy 😂 my #autism isn't a fan of the total disruption of EVERYTHING! But it likes the well structured days. Everything is planned out and I don't have to do any of the planing 😬 Food isn't half bad either 🙂

  23. The temperature keeps rising and next week we'll be having 40°C (104°F) for at least five consecutive days. 🥵

Thankfully, I work from home so I'll make it as manageable as possible but I'll still have to go out for my daily physiotherapy appointments.

Couldn't my spine, neck and left arm agree to inflict this misery on me some time in the autumn? Wouldn't mind walking to my clinic on a few crisp autumn mornings... 🍂 🍁

  25. CW: Taking care of neck and back pain

    @0batty_bat0

    aww, sounds bad!

    My 5 ct:

    1) find out which muscles are the issue. In the end, everything is connected and the system needs to be understood as a whole, but identifying where the main symptoms manifest helps:

    open.oregonstate.education/aan

    2) the three main problem solvers for muscular pains are for me: a) ergonomy, b) mobilization routines, and c) strength excercises.

    a) ergonomy: static positions are poison for our body. Computers and smartphones suck especially. Check out info about workplace ergonomy. Also, don't forget the other place we are (hopefully) many hours: your pillow! (and check which mattress type your body needs) The needs differ with sleeping positions and many other things. What worked out greatly for me, was to switch to husk pillows (buckwheat, spelt...). You can adapt them very well to your needs.
traditionalcookingschool.com/s (IGNORE CHRISTIAN TRADWIFE-SHIT when on the page, but that was what I found in english right now, sorry)

    b) related to ergonomy, regular stretching and mobilization can work wonders. Start small and soft and don't do stuff that hurts without professional advice (feeling tension is ok, but burning pain is not). There are tons of nice neck&back mobilization routines out there.
Yoga, Tai-Chi or Qi-Gong are generally advisable practices, but your instructor needs to know what they are doing. Of course, there are also some "normal" sports that can be good for your back and neck, like swimming or climbing. But then you need to be very cautious about your postures and technique, and start very slowly.
Maybe it makes sense to concentrate first on your specific problem (but as I said, everything is connected, and neck pain can even be a symptom of postural problems in knees, hips or other places).

    c) strength training is really good. It is a pity that patriarchy and capitalism came up with gym-broism, but almost all of us would benefit from working out more. Stronger muscles protect your joints and fix postures. There is so much that can be cured by going to the gym. I dare to say that injury risk is overrated (and can be strongly reduced by good practices like stretching, warming-up, having advice from an experienced person and not doing gym-bro-stuff with too heavy weights) and way more people have problems from not doing strength exercises.

    3) physiotherapy can help, but it depends a lot on the schools and practices e.g. in Germany, physiotherapy is surprisingly bad (they don't want to touch you, but also don't have a holistic vision of musculature) while in Spain, it seems that the profession is several decades ahead.
However, it can make sense to invest money into physiotherapy, especially if you have somebody recommended..

    Take care! :ecoanarchism_heart:

  28. So, I don't want to say that physio therapists are magicians, but the quadricep tendon exercises I've been given, 2 of which I'm not ready for, and 2 I can do...have had me standing and sitting with no pain for the first time since my fall. #physiotherapy

  30. If you're in the #Cambridge area and looking for #work, like small very #startup-y environments, and appreciate good coffee/drinks and BBQs at an office* in a rural setting then they're ("we're"?) hiring: careers.flok.health/

Codebase is mainly Python and TypeScript with some Rust on the side, but things are very much a moving target.

Oh, they're hiring in #physiotherapy too!

Software developers and physiotherapists... it isn't your normal software company. (And note that it is NOT a GenAI company.)

Hiring seems to be at least just as hard now as I recall from 10 years ago... and I know it's also hard from the job-seeking direction too, it took me months of mostly never even getting acknowledgements to applications for jobs I'd selected as a very good fit, taken the time to tailor cover letters for, etc... it was hell.

    * 4 days per week on-site.
