  1. In the USA there's the American Association of Physics Teachers <aapt.org/>, which promotes many physics-education activities. And its members also get the *American Journal of Physics* and the *Physics Teacher* – excellent physics-education journals – for free.

    I'm very surprised and a bit disappointed that in Europe there's nothing of the kind.

  2. Noether’s Theorem: Symmetry→Conservation Law.

    Symmetries of the action imply conserved quantities per Noether's theorem.

    A path q(t) is shifted by δq = φ but smoothed in transition layers τ wide at t0 and t1, where Δq̇ ≈ φ/τ. Action changes there approximate ΔS ≈ (∂L/∂q̇) Δq̇ τ ≈ −(∂L/∂q̇ φ)(t1) and ≈ +(∂L/∂q̇ φ)(t0).
    Symmetry sets total ΔS = 0, hence (∂L/∂q̇ φ) is conserved from t0 to t1.

    Momentum conservation's derivation from space translation symmetry and energy conservation from time translation symmetry in mechanics and physics is done by it.

  4. More work on the next #DotNetMAUI app - an educational #physics game. Dippers, barriers and cross-sections can be moved around the ripple tank to create and observe various wave phenomena. Buttons at the bottom will be used to add objects.

  7. This is an old animation I had on VHS. I animated the train part (30 yrs ago?) with Mathematica on my NeXTdimension cube (using the graphic board NTSC Composite outputs). I renumerized it back from tape lately and added the scrolling text. Et aujourd'hui j'ai accolé l'intro musicale. Reste plus qu'à mettre des bips bips sonores lors de l'arrivée des impulsions lumineuses dans la partie 'train'...

  10. What are current sites, or journals, where one can ask physics questions of a somewhat technical nature? Stackexchange was such a place, but its quality and participation seem to be declining of late. Some physics journals used to have a "questions" section, but I don't know any that do now. I haven't found any useful hashtags on Mastodon for this kind of purpose either...

  11. Let me try a little physics riddle here on Mastodon. This riddle is really meant as a moment of self-reflection for physics teachers (in particular I invite you to compare what answers you'd give within Relativity Theory)

    We're in the context of Newtonian mechanics.

    There are three small bodies. In the inertial coordinate system (t, x, y, z), we know the following about the three bodies (at a given instant of time):

    - The first has mass 3 kg
    - The second has velocity (1, 0, 0) m/s
    - The third has momentum (2, 0, 0) kg⋅m/s

    Now consider a new coordinate system (t', x', y', z') related to the first by a Galileian boost:

    t' = t, x' = x – u⋅t, y' = y, z' = z
    with u = 1 m/s

    Questions:

    - What is the mass of the first body in the new coordinate system?
    - What is the velocity of the second body in the new coordinate system?
    - What is the momentum of the third body in the new coordinate system?

    Can you give definite answers to these three questions, and *motivate your answers with simple physical principles*? Note that by "definite answer" I don't necessarily mean an answer with a definite numerical value.
