  3. The 8-Bit Computer Implemented in K’NEX
    It's an oft-forgotten fact that the workings of the modern computer don't require electronics. All of the basic logic gates can be implemented, although much more slowly and prone to malfunction, with physical Newtonian parts.

    Shadowman39 has been working hard to implement an 8-bit computer entirely out of parts of the building set K'

  4. Opening up my 2010 projBox, my first experience with Arduino. Apart from the birdshit solder joints, sticky potentiometers and not-even rat's nest wiring:

    * one out of the four switches doesn't register;

    * one of the LEDs is connected to the wrong port;

    * one of the potentiometers somehow affects other analogue channels.

    Maybe I'll rewire it. It might benefit from a hard-wired shield. Kind of proud of the period-appropriate Arduino Duemilanove in there, though

  6. Milestone: achieved gender parity in both programming courses I’m teaching next semester #SwiftUI and #PhysicalComputing. A regular repost with ideas on how faculty, especially those who “look like me” can promote tech diversity. open.substack.com/pub/profgall

  8. Here's a look at Week 11 of #CircuitPython #PhysicalComputing class. Students made rubber band launchers with a #RaspberryPi Pico, joystick, 3 servos, and a button. Big fun! youtube.com/shorts/envNY1mYCEQ

  10. eek, found my old projBox — complete with Arduino Duemilanove and my then-terrible soldering. It was my introduction to Physical computing.

    Anyone else get their start with Arduino/Processing with the O'Reilly course "Processing and Arduino in Tandem"? The projBox was designed for that course

  12. PyCharm is a fantastic editor for #CircuitPython. I use it in my #PhysicalComputing course. The IDE has changed recently so here is an updated install video focused on the @raspberrypi pico dealing with the quirks of editing & running code on a microcontroller youtu.be/5LoXTVGlNVU?si=9_XAXP

  14. @aud I'm just in the process of conceiving a new contemporary computing device. Maybe you'd be interested as a replacement...

    It's a cube shaped box, roughly 5-10cm of dimension. At the top there is one big button. If you press it, it vibrates aggressively and through a loudspeaker it says loudly "WHAT THE FUCK!?"
    It will be very useful in the coming days, weeks and years. I'm certain people will love it!

  16. Do you have a PhD related to user experience (UX) design/AR/VR/HCC/spatial human-computer interaction/physical computing/accessibility? On Feb 28th my School begins reviewing applications for an assistant prof to start fall 2025.

  18. Join our upcoming free #CreativeComputing online session for teachers on Oct 1st at 16:00! Book here: warwick.ac.uk/turtlestitch

    Children create patterns using @turtlestitch & their patterns can be stitched onto fabric, enabling #manufacturing to take place in the classroom. Children learn coding, problem-solving & resilience.

  19. Our next free #CreativeComputing online session for teachers is now open for booking. 1st Oct 16.00.

    It introduces @turtlestitch and its use in the classroom. Children learn coding, problem-solving & resilience, creating patterns that can be stitched onto fabric using an embroidery machine.

    Places are free, book here: warwick.ac.uk/turtlestitch

  20. Powering on #astropi sense HAT for the first time.

    8yo (who has been coding against the emulator so far) : "Oh wow, it's a rainbow! Oh look! Each one has a little red, green and blue light in it. Mind blown... It all makes sense now!"
    Me: "What makes sense?"
    8yo: "the RGB in the code, it's how much red, green and blue for the lights!
    ...
    So, can we show my cat on it now?"

    She'd heard the explanation, but actually seeing it... Clicked!
    The power of #physicalcomputing.

    Thanks @Raspberry_Pi
