This is Harper's Ferry, West Virginia in 2015. A few months before this picture was taken, a fire raged through its historic commercial section gutting the building here and another adjacent. This view is the back of the buildings. I don't know the two people in the lower left of the image, one is apparently a monk or nun, but I am happy they are there. (And I'm happy you're here, too.)

Dear friends, This American Robin leaves a dense thicket of #Wineberries (Rubus phoenicolasius), invasive here on Long Island.
The neighborhood #SongBirds love them. But they spread the seeds. These berries are delicate.This #Robin has a tender touch!
I will remove after harvesting. I tried cutting them back to weaken them. It will have to be the mattock!

I don't know if the photo here of this Youhiogheny River section pictures is, in fact, a healthy ecosystem, but it is a lovely view and there is lots of carbon loveliness in those trees and in the forest floor. #FensterFreitag. This #house, at least the main part on the right, is over 300 years old. It's a rare "overhanging salt box" style. The house is owned by the local township, is nationally registered as an historic site, yet remains in disrepair. I'll speak up about it having just noticed what poor condition it is in.

This is a view out the window of a #NarrowGauge #train #caboose taken at the #Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad & #Transportation #Museum. Narrow gauge tracks are only 3 feet between the rails. The history of railways in this region is complicated - coming in the wake of the #California Gold Rush and the near total extermination of the #indigenous peoples of Northern Calif. and the #Sacramento Valley.

We store outdoor chairs during the winter in a small wood shed. Try keeping #mice out! Good luck! Here they have carried in #walnuts, set up their #DiningRoom on the seat of one of them, chewed the shells to #sawdust, and extracted the meat very effectively. And with no apparent concerns about about a shared dining room and #toilet. Good for you, field mice!!

I have a #physics question about #bicycles.
What roll does pedaling play in stabilizing a bike, especially when cornering?
When I take a corner on a #bike I believe I gain more stability when I pedal through it. I'm not sure it's caused by the higher speed pressing me into the corner because I will often brake at the same time to keep the speed down. My #dumbass #theory is pedaling offers some #gyroscopic stability.

Trees are thinned leaving room for the Mule's Ears (Wyethia angustifolia) and some other stuff I couldn't identify to thrive in the understory. Notice the burn piles of woody debris (aka slash). They may be burned after seasoning or some left for habitat.

This is what proactive wildfire management can look like. Trees are thinned, bottom story shrubs and debris are culled. Prevents #wildfires from spreading along the ground and subsequent flaring from tree tops. This generally makes fires easier to contain, manage or control over time.
