  4. Article: Take back photos from Big Tech in 2023

    diyphotography.net/take-back-p

Saved you a click: Use external drives and print photos instead of using cloud storage.

Also the irony of them having a sponsor is not lost on me.

  5. Article: Look Inside a 150-Year-Old Camera

    fstoppers.com/historical/look-

It's a camera obscura. It's a building that uses the properties of a camera, and it's rather neat.

  6. Article: Couples Are Hiring TikTok Creators to Avoid Waiting Weeks for Professional Wedding Photos

    petapixel.com/2022/12/27/coupl

There's a lot of stuff I hate about TikTok, but I also dislike gatekeepers who draw an imaginary line between "professionals" and "people who get paid to do a thing."

I'm thrilled the TikTok users are finding ways to make money using their skills. Goodness knows their platform doesn't pay much.

  7. Article: Video Game Photography in the 2020s: We've come a long way since the PS2

    dpreview.com/articles/17804087

I remember in the early days of Flickr the policy was to /only/ allow photos, which made a lot of video game players (mostly Second Life, IIRC) very upset, because they felt their screencaps were as valid, compositionally, as something created with a camera.

This was back when game graphics could only hope to render scenes this realistic.

  8. Article: Midjourney Founder Admits to Using a ‘Hundred Million’ Images Without Consent

    petapixel.com/2022/12/21/midjo

Copyright is a method for enforcing consent.

Stop using #AI art generators. Their programmers seem to universally not understand what consent means.

  9. Article: Abandoned cars: Why it’s great to photograph in bad weather!

    photofocus.com/opinion/abandon

There isn't much in the way of practical tips in this article, but night photography of rusting vehicles is a darned cool aesthetic, as evidenced by the author's included images.

  10. Article: A woman started photography at the age of 60, showing it’s never too late to reinvent yourself

    diyphotography.net/a-woman-sta

Teaching is not my first career.

Teaching digital media is not my first subject.

    Trying new things is good.

  11. Article: Photographer Sues Gannett for $34 Million For Copyright Infringement

    petapixel.com/2022/12/15/photo

Gannett shared a screenshot in a significant number of news agencies, crediting the photographer but not asking for permission or providing compensation.

Yeah, copyright is long overdue for an overhaul that strips back a lot of its power, but this is a case that shows why we still need it in at least some capacity.

  12. Article: Flickr Establishes New Nonprofit to Preserve Photography’s History

    petapixel.com/2022/12/13/flick

Flickr Commons has existed for years - since before the Yahoo! purchase, in fact - but it looks like there's been some restructuring and funding that's taken place.

  13. Article: These mesmerizing extreme macro images of eyes are like windows to other worlds

    diyphotography.net/these-mesme

I feel like CW: Eye Contact would be an understatement for this one.

  14. Article: Shutter Priority and when to use it

    photofocus.com/photography/shu

Again, it is rare for me to find an article that is between the skillsets of "Point lens away from face" and "We're assuming you already own $5k worth of gear." This is an article I could share with students.

  16. Article: After Company Tries to Copyright His Photo, Photographer Wins Almost $1.2M

    rangefinderonline.com/news-fea

Before you reply with a statement about how evil copyright is, understand that copyright law is how this independent photographer was able to win this case. Otherwise the business would have been able to just keep using his art without fear of repercussions.

#Copyright Law is not black and white good or bad. It's a tool.

  17. Article: You’ve got a new camera. Now what? Part two

    photofocus.com/photography/you

Most photo guides I find online assume you already have $2000+ in gear and know all the vocabulary to go with it.

It's nice to find one going over the basics, many of which apply even if you aren't using a DSLR or mirrorless camera.

  18. Article: Photographer Captures Supernova That Exploded in the Year 1054

    petapixel.com/2022/12/19/photo

"McCarthy trained his telescope on the Crab Nebula, an outwardly expanding supernova remnant that exploded in 1054 A.D."

  19. Article: Free, open-source raw editor RawTherapee updated to version 5.9

    dpreview.com/news/6510292472/f

I prefer Darktable for editing RAW photos, but I like that there's competition.

  20. Article: Photography activities for kids: Composition 101

    photofocus.com/photography/pho

It's rare for me to find a photography article that doesn't assume everyone has a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Most kids don't, but this is a way to get started.

  23. Small claims process finally passed into law for US copyright infringement victims

    dpreview.com/news/9328798338/s

This is great news for photographers and other self-employed artists.

Regardless of how you feel about copyright, independent artists deserve to eat.
