  1. The #Skagen artists' colony and its painters are world-famous. Now the #SkagensMuseum has finally discovered a treasure trove of photographs showing the lives of the artists and their photographic originals. This video gives a wonderful insight into this treasure.

It is also exciting to see how they emphasize that it was a mistake to have ignored the documents for so long, as they offer a unique insight into the lives of the artists.

  2. The French and English Fleets at Cherbourg, by Gustave Le Gray, 1858. This sublime marine view is part of the recent mass release of 492,000 high-resolution images of artistic works by the Metropolitian Museum of Art.

  3. George Tames - The Loneliest Job (1961). At the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York, in a press photo exhibit. He leaned like this because of his bad back and was only reading a newspaper, but we'd readily believe it was during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

  4. I loved this from Bruce Gilden in an interview playing at his Fotografiska exhibit:

“I’m angry. I’ll always be angry. If I stop being angry, I’ll lose my art. I’ll stop being Bruce Gilden.”

There was another I can only paraphrase: he knows he can't be Cartier-Bresson, but he can be the best possible version of Bruce Gilden. Words to live by.

  5. Governess and nanny shoots over 150k photos in her lifetime, never shows them. Doesn't develop some. She ages in poverty. In 2007, her work is auctioned from a forgotten storage locker. It goes viral on Flickr. Now there are documentaries and books. Dying in 2009, she's never to know she's now seen as one of the great 20th century street photographers. That’s fake, right?

  6. One more for #Caturday. Evelyn Hofer: Cat in a Dublin pub (1966)

I believe the pub is Mulligan's in Dublin. Almost 300 years old and appears in a Joyce short story. There's nothing new to say about the photo. Hofer was a master.

  11. In 1858 #OnThisDate, Giles Wheeler Ford of Olympia, Washington Territory, posted this ad for the first time in the local Pioneer and Democrat newspaper. Just two years later, he drifted away from photography as a full-time occupation. Read more about him in chapter 2 of my book, Artistic and Life-Like: Photography in Washington, 1850-1900.

  14. My latest exploration of early photography in Washington State just arrived in today's mail. It's the story of famous (and infamous) photographer Eadweard Muybridge and his little-known 1871 trip to document the lighthouses along Washington's coast. It's in the summer issue of Columbia, the magazine of the Washington State Historical Society.

  20. Canadian photographer Hannah Maynard (1834-1918) set the high bar for photomontage prints. From 1880 to 1885, she created dozens of increasingly complex images. Her masterpiece was a single image made up of 22,000 individual portraits.

  25. Modern color photography is amazing, but there's something about an autochrome that just leaps off the page. This 1915 portrait of an unidentified woman by Rudolph Dührkoop is a great example of the art.

  27. In 1836 #onthisday David Roby (D. R.) Judkins was born in Chesterville, Maine. He and others in his family moved to Seattle in 1880, where he operated Judkins Floating Sunbeam Gallery. It was a photography studio on a small barge, and Judkins had it towed to small towns around Puget Sound and into British Columbia. In addition to doing a lively portrait business, he created a series of stereoviews of the places he visited.
