  1. It’s an absurdity that English is the most spoken language in the world (as first and second language).

If you know anyone who has learned it as a second language, applaud their intelligence and resilience.

And if you poke fun at someone fumbling with it, your cheek needs to field an open palm at high speed.

  2. [P] Hm. Those who see phonics as a right-wing plot are an ignorant sort who'll have no idea who Marion Joseph was. The problems which have occurred in phonics—ehich do lean toward a right-wing, authoritarian means of thinking—are not with phonics itself, but with systematic instruction. As aystematic instruction can be a one-size-fits-all which ignores race, class, ability, neurodivergence, and other factors. It hurts all forms of education.

    #phonics
Mississippi vastly improved learning scores by dropping Whole word learning. Requiring 2 years reading education training for K-4 teachers. And having a hard reading test in 3rd grade required for advancement to the next grade.

She does spend lots of time dissing "progressive" educators, so warning for that, but it just gets me that Phonic vs Whole word has been a battle since the 1950s at least!

  4. Philadelphia schools are adopting a new K-8 literacy curriculum, Expeditionary Learning, focused on the "science of reading." It combines structured phonics with nonfiction texts to build both word knowledge and world knowledge. buff.ly/3CIHV5r

  5. A is for Boat, P is for Balloon, K is for Football — and so is B…

…and W is for Jelly, wobbly or otherwise.

I’m assured by my beloved — who has the measure of such things — that this is the worst introduction to Phonics she has ever seen:

  7. This made me laugh. The English language is absurd. People capable of learning it as a second language are highly intelligent.

  8. Up until 5 years ago, Ingrid Connors was still working out her award-winning Monster Phonics reading scheme on her kitchen table.

With magnetic modesty, Ingrid is keen to emphasise that it is her team, now numbering 12, – and the merits of the reading programme itself – that have done all the hard work.

Ingrid Connors says proudly, one of the many X-factors that Monster Phonics has, is its inclusivity of all children learning to spell, read and write.

And when Ingrid says ‘all’ she means all.

OK, seriously for a moment, you know how a snort mixed with a laugh is called a snarf... should we spell it as I have or as snaugh??

  11. @alfiekohn

I had to watch hours of "Science of Reading" video required by my state's #education department a few years ago. When asked for feedback, I pointed out the Anglo-centricism of the #phonics.

Certain vowels are presented as a single sound, but in other languages, they are viewed as blended vowels. Examples include long-i (ah-ee), long-a (eh-ee), and ou/ow (ah-oh).

Non-native speaking students could be at a disadvantage.

  12. @FallsMom @Lady_Star_Gem The gun stuff is sad, but pushing schools to switch from three-cuing back to #phonics is legitimate. Three-cuing doesn't teach kids to read; it teaches them to guess. apmreports.org/episode/2019/08

  13. @MichiganCJ kia ora from New Zealand. I have recently started my own exploration of the Science of Reading, hoping we do some PD as a school too. I have dabbled with a few attempts at phonics lessons with my 9-11 year olds and they seemed very interested. Hope I can learn more 🤩

I followed you on the bird app , rarely put my head above the parapet though. Too many big hitters who liked to shout others down . This is far friendlier . #EduTooter #EYFS #Phonics #EarlyLiteracy #EarlyMaths #Subitising

  19. As much as I loved my graduate level professors, I have found their approach to teaching reading...problematic. I remember beginning my year teaching third grade bilingual, working with children who needed to learn to read in English. At the time, as I was prepping my classroom in the portable building, one of the paraeducators was shocked at my actions. "You aren't going to teach phonics?"

    I remember chuckling, and saying, "No, that's not the way it's done anymore." But, now, I know better. mguhlin.org/2022/08/mynotes-ph #Education #Phonics #Reading #EduTooters @edutooters

  20. I haven't figured out yet how to best interact with communities on here so for now I'll try hashtags.

I have a #teaching question. I have a handful of children in my Y3 class who need support with spelling. They are making phonetically plausible spellings but rarely choosing the correct graphemes. We do spelling lessons 4 times a week to introduce new words and recap general spelling rules but there are a small number of children who I think need some kind of intervention.

I am limited in terms of extra adults or 1:1 support I can provide for this, so I'm looking for something they could do independently that would help them.
