  1. The Apache Cordova team had a virtual meetup today to review what we did in 2024 and discuss our plans (and hope and dreams) for 2025. You can watch the livestream recording on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=mxZsVWJ8AT8

It's great to hear feedback from the community, particularly around getting more people involved and improving documentation. Ongoing support and maintenance of plugins remains a challenge (both for the dev team and for people wanting to use plugins).

  2. 📣 Calling all Apache Cordova plugin developers:
We've just published a beta version of the next cordova-ios release, and it includes some breaking changes. The intent of the beta is to allow plugin authors to test their plugins and report issues.

We've written a guide for upgrading your plugins: apache.github.io/cordova-ios/d

  3. We've been given approval to open-source a few tools and components at work, so I'll probably be sharing a few links over the next week.

Starting off, we have some scripts to take SVG files and generate everything you need for mobile app icons: github.com/AyogoHealth/icon-to

This is what we've used for several years for all our Cordova and Capacitor apps, and shows my willingness to replace busy work with bash scripts. 😁

  4. Do you use Apache Cordova for building mobile apps? We have a community survey open until December 24th to help identify pain points and areas for improvement. We'd love to hear your input!

  5. I'm a #Javascript / #Vuejs dev who wants to build a #WearOS app for funzies. Anyone have a suggestion for where to start? I've used #PhoneGap / #Cordova in the past. I don't think that your watch can handle a web view all that competantly, though.

    Suggestions?

  6. Damn, blast from the past! Haven't worked on #PhoneGap in 10 years and it's still being mentioned 🤯 fosstodon.org/@krinkle/1094857

  7. Consumer of React Native realises 2011-era PhoneGap is all you need.

Decoupling from React in this way makes a lot of sense, they could even switch off React entirely in a future refactor whilst keeping RN as PhoneGap-like bridge. A win against vendor lock-in, that's for sure.

  8. "The myth of the #crossplatform #mobile #application is as old as the #iOS + #Android duopoly. Back in 2008, a small Canadian company called Nitobi Software released a JavaScript-based framework for cross-platform mobile applications called #PhoneGap. Adobe snatched Nitobi in 2011, right after realizing that Steve Jobs was right, and that mobile apps based on #Flash were nothing else than a chimera."

Socket is a new runtime for building native apps for desktop and mobile using #html, #css, and #javascript!

It’s written from scratch. It doesn’t use #electron or #phonegap, and learning rust isn’t required.
