  12. Modern Friendship: Two Coffees, Zero Conversation

You know, I met up with my buddy, Jeff, the other day. We used to be so close, always hanging out, shooting the shit, but now? We might as well be living on different planets! I mean, we arranged this whole thing, he came all the way across town, fought for a parking spot, waited in line for these overpriced coffees… and why? So he could sit there and scroll through TikTok for two hours straight!

I’m not even exaggerating! I get there, I say “Hey, what’s up?” He goes, “Yeah bro, crazy.” Then he starts showing me these videos, “Bro, look at this!” “Dude, check this out!” Every single one starts blasting at full volume, of course.  You’ve got a baby laughing, then suddenly it’s some guy screaming about stocks! I’m sitting there thinking, “What the hell is going on?”

He’s got these headphones too, they’re just sitting there on the table. Decorative headphones, that’s what they are! But nooo, we can’t have those. We gotta share his little algorithm with the entire café! The waiter, the couple next to us, probably people across the street – they’re all part of Jeff’s For You page now!

Imagine you’re just trying to enjoy your chai latte, reading a book or something. Then all of a sudden, you’re subjected to some teenager’s fitness routine, complete with screaming motivational music! And you, trying to have a private conversation with your girlfriend? Tough luck, because now you’re also a financial advisor!

And Jeff just keeps scrolling, scrolling, scrolling! I’m like, “Hey man, what’s new with you?” He barely hears me, just goes “Yeah, bro, crazy,” then hits me with another Reel. One minute it’s a dog barking, the next it’s some dude speaking in robot voices! I have no idea what’s happening anymore!

So here I am, shouting over his phone just to be heard. It’s like trying to talk to a toddler in a candy store! Finally, I tell him to turn it down. He does… But you know what’s really crazy? He’s actually enjoying this! He gets excited when the volume kicks up again. Like he’s living for the chaos!

And we’re not even the only ones! Everyone’s doing this now. Sitting in cafes, not talking to each other. Just staring at their phones, pretending they’re “charging” or whatever. “Oh yeah, we’re still friends. Look, we’re in the same room! See how we’re not looking at each other?” What a crock of shit!

I mean, these apps are clever. TikTok, Instagram Reels… they know how to keep us hooked. You think you’re just scrolling for fun, but really they’re playing mind games! Before you know it, you’re watching some 19 year old beside a rented sports car tell you how to manage your money. “Work on your side hustle, bro! Be your own boss!” What the fuck do you know about that?

And don’t get me started on all the crap we save for later! Recipes we’ll never make, workouts we’ll never do, dream holidays we’ll never afford. It’s like a graveyard of good intentions up in there! Meanwhile, we’re supposed to be friends. You know what we actually talked about? “Yeah, bro, crazy.”

But you know what the real kicker is? He messages me afterwards. “Good seeing you bro. We should do this more often.” Then he sends another video. I open it… and it starts blasting again. Full volume.  In a completely silent room. That’s modern friendship for you…. “Yeah, bro. Crazy”

  13. Your phone is not the problem.
    Uncontrolled usage is.

You don’t need to quit your phone.
    You just need better boundaries.

    Tiny actions:

📵 Don’t check your phone immediately after waking up
📵 Don’t use it during meals
📵 Don’t take it to the bathroom
    📵 Turn off unnecessary notifications
    📵 Set app limits
📵 Charge your phone away from your bed

Your phone should support your life — not control it.

  14. Steps to Cultivate a Mindful, Intentional Life

The benefits of intentional living are numerous and can significantly improve one’s overall well-being. By slowing down and appreciating the present moment, we reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and improve our relationships with others. Additionally, slow living can lead to greater purpose and fulfillment as we learn to prioritize what truly matters and let go of society’s unnecessary distractions and pressures. Embracing slow living can lead to a happier, healthier, and more meaningful life.

    Slowing Down My Mornings

I’ve been starting some of my mornings sitting in my backyard, gazing off into the woods

Listening to the birds, crickets, and other insects is a symphony of nature’s silence in its splendor

The gentle breeze stirs the leaves on the tree, as sunlight infuses them with a golden light, slowly shifting towards verdant green hues

I feel the soft breeze on my skin; a hint of coolness, subtleties of spring

My awareness rests upon delicate spiderwebs that shimmer as the sun catches and reflects minuscule worlds in each droplet of dew

I hear a hawk, more near now, searching for prey, as it glides silently above

There is so much promise in the morning light

    Intentional Living

Living intentionally is a lifestyle that requires purposeful actions, thoughts, and feelings. It is a conscious effort to make choices that align with your values and goals. When you practice intentional or mindful living, you can significantly reduce stress, increase happiness, and improve relationships. To achieve this balance, you must set clear intentions, develop a holistic daily routine, practice mindfulness, and reflect on your actions and decisions. By doing so, you can create a more meaningful and satisfying life. Intentional living is a powerful tool that can help you attain balance and fulfillment in all aspects of your life.

Steps to Begin Living an Intentional Life

    1. Define Your Values
Identify what truly matters to you in life. Consider areas such as family, health, career, and personal growth.
    2. Set Clear Intentions
Establish specific, meaningful goals that align with your core values. Write them down to solidify your commitment.
    3. Prioritize Your Time
Focus on activities that support your intentions. Create a schedule that dedicates time to these priority tasks while eliminating distractions.
    4. Practice Mindfulness
Incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or journaling into your daily routine to enhance self-awareness.
    5. Reflect Regularly
Take time each week to reflect on your actions and decisions. Assess whether they align with your intentions and values, and make necessary adjustments.
    6. Cultivate Gratitude
Maintain a gratitude journal where you acknowledge positive aspects of your life. This practice helps you stay motivated and engaged.
    7. Embrace Flexibility
Understand that living intentionally is a journey. Be open to adapting your goals and routines as needed to stay aligned with your evolving self.
    8. Seek Support
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who inspire and encourage your intentional living journey. Engage in communities that share your values.

By following these steps, you can start to live a more purposeful and fulfilling life.

    Personal Experience

I have been practicing intentional living on and off for decades; however, it is in the last 4.5 years that this practice has truly become an integral part of my daily life. The major shift that prompted this transformation occurred when I made the life-changing decision to stop drinking. Since then, I have embraced a way of being that is both deliberate yet yielding, allowing me to navigate life with a newfound sense of flexibility. There has been a softening in my approach to life that I’ve come to cherish deeply. I am more centered in my values, having gained a clearer understanding of the importance of setting healthy boundaries while also being open to new experiences. This has fostered a more lighthearted attitude, enabling me to fully live in the moment without the weight of past habits. I find renewed joy in the little things and an appreciation for the journey rather than just the destination.

    Embracing Intentionality

I tend to reevaluate my values and intentions seasonally. The natural shift blends seamlessly with how I need to view life as an ever-changing flow of experiences and lessons. This past season, I carefully examined the time I spent on various tasks and habits throughout the day. How much time I was spending on my phone was disquieting, as it became a barrier to deeper interactions and meaningful activities.

A shift towards intentionality was required to regain focus on what truly matters. I decided to read more instead of scrolling or playing mindless games on the phone. To accomplish this, I installed the app Opal on my phone, which allows me to limit the time I spend on the phone or certain apps, transforming my relationship with technology. I went from an average of 7 hours a day on the phone down to 3.3 hours a day on average, gaining back years of my life. Now I have reclaimed time for hobbies, self-improvement, and spending quality moments with loved ones.

    Naturalness

These small shifts can have a significant impact over time. When we practice intentional living, we align with our true nature. We begin to remember that we are a part of the Earth and her cycles, and we learn to flow with the pace of nature: patience.

What small steps can you take to move towards a more deliberate life, one open to experience, yet focused by healthy boundaries?

    Meditation for Slowing Down

Try a delightful Morning Meditation. It cultivates a sense of calm and tranquility, helping you to gently ease into your day.

Additionally, if you wish to delve deeper into your meditation journey, you might find the Body Scan Meditation incredibly helpful for harmonizing your mind, body, and spirit. I hope this guides you toward peace and mindfulness throughout your day!

  16. 9. When I try to put my phone down, it feels like an inner double-pull:

A vacuum‑cleaner vortex dragging me into the screen – and the moment I ask “Why am I doing this?”, a tiny angry Rumpelstilzchen in me yells: “Absolutely not! We’re not looking at that! That’s what the phone is for!”

I just watch. So much in me says: anything but the feeling — straight into the phone.

  17. 8. Next step: Bought an old-school alarm clock. My phone can charge in the living room at night. What happens instead? 😂

My inner Monty Python sketch: “Leave the phone in the living room? Sure, I’ll do it. … Soon. Or tomorrow. … Or… well? …never?”
Making deals with myself is like political negotiations—lots of talk, little action.
At least humor helps, even when the phone is still right next to me.

  18. 6. Self-care as a friendly invitation to consider myself important? My inner slacker is already rolling its eyes.

But maybe that’s the trick for less smartphone time: not being stricter, but kinder to myself. Charging my batteries instead of running on autopilot.

Time to get off the “ego trip” that others are always more important than me.

  19. 5. The Kantian question: What is a human?

Today, I was more dog than human. Instead of chasing dopamine clicks on my phone, I had sun on my face and grass under my feet. My dog just rolls in the moment—while I? I’m learning from her that real life doesn’t happen on a screen.

To the question “What is a human?” I definitely don’t want to answer: a digitally living junkie.

  20. Sometimes I wonder when I turned from the kid staring at slot machine junkies in smoky bars into my own smartphone zombie.

My minimalism device is now my endless jackpot—and I’m the player who can’t stop.

My analog fingers lead me into digital addiction. We think we live digitally, but dopamine is still released the analog way.

I Killed Color on My #Phone. The Result Shocked Me.

“…when I spied an article about the benefits of switching one’s phone to a black-and-white color scheme, I figured I’d give it a whirl.

“The result was shocking. The moment I switched, I no longer felt an urgent need to look at my #iPhone — an urge that I hadn’t known was so strong until it was gone. I experienced a full- bodied sense of relief when the colors faded to gray.”

  22. Part 5: Controll

Somehow i like many others have ended up losing controll instead of gaining it with these pocket computers. I can take that controll back and befit from truly good devices. It takes habits and good software.

I am getting a fairphone3 or 4 as soon as i have money for it. And degoogle the shit out of it with some alternative os. That will be my hard reset with all the things i mention on previous post.

    #smartphones #phoneaddiction #fairphone #badhabits #digitallifestyle

  23. Part 4:how to improve?
-have set times to check your measages. If its important, they will call !
-leave the phone charging while at home, use messaging on the PC more mindfully
-at home, reach for your notebooks or gaming handheld collections more, not the phone
-dont check phone as a first thing on the morning, do it after breakfast
    -downgrade and degoogle the phone

This is a start at least. Right?

    #smartphones #phoneaddiction #socialmedia #badhabits #selfimprovement #digitallifestyle

  24. Part 3: go dumbphone?
-i have 2 jobs that both require whatsap for communication, even on the move
    -i need modern banking app
-some functions like navigation and access to webbrowser is sometimes needed on the go so i would need backup smartphone anyway for travel

So, even if i go full dumbphobe i would end up needing a smartone on the side. Like it or not you are living in a digital world honey!

    #smartphones #phoneaddiction #socialmedia #badhabits #selfimprovement #digitallifestyle

  25. Part 2: bad phone!
-Always reaching for it at home
-So many messages always interrupting thought!
-"i have to ansver imediatly!" feeling i get when i hear a notice
-Going to same old sites and do nothing of value or even fun, not really reading anything
    -not writing things down anymore

I only post and browse mastodon as my social media so i dont have doomscrolling habits at least.

    #smartphones #phoneaddiction #socialmedia #badhabits #selfimprovement #digitallifestyle

  26. Part 1: good things about smartphones!
    -True portable computer
    -My audiobook and music player
-I like to use mastodon on my phone
    -Modern conveniences like online banking
-modern communication channels while on the go
-portable data storage always at hand
    -camera at hand

So with phones portability is the king. Its really handy tool while you dont have access to prober PC.

  27. I am overwhelmed with my smartphone habits and deeply disapointed to my self for a lack of controll in my digital life... so i am writing an multipart rant here!

    Part 0: This post!
Part 1: Genuingly good things i use smartphones!
Part 2: Bad things i do to my self with smartphone!
Part3: Why i cannot just dumbphone?
Part 4: How to improve things?
Part5: some wrap up i quess...

  29. So my phone's usb c port died for real and now I'm on an involunatry phone detox. Luckily it's a fairphone so I can replace the port myself, BUT it will take a while until the spare part arrives.
