1. The Rose Field by #PhilipPullman.
Disappointing conclusion to an uneven trilogy. Parts of it reminded me of His Dark Materials and not in a good way. More like, “This again?” It’s already an interesting story, why clutter it with repetitive elements or extraneous characters and subplots? Pullman poses interesting questions and explores ideas that are easily mapped onto the current shitshow that’s our world. But the answers and resolution are unsatisfying. Maybe my disgust at real life and need for answers makes me judge this too harshly. I might be up for a re-read later…

Re-read to prep for the final book. These 600+ pages are warranted, unlike 95% of the sci-fi/fantasy books I’ve read this year. The Books of Dust evolve and complicate the beloved world of His Dark Materials in many ways, but one of the most arresting is in the relationships between people and their daemons. It’s shocking, heart-breaking, and very human.

The #HisDarkMaterials TV adaptation from the novel series of the same name by #PhilipPullman.
Another live-action adaptation wherein they did not overdo yet at the same time was not lacking.
They picked the important parts, plots, and little tidbits, and focused on the message and essence of the story.
They did not fall into the "Hollywood" formula wherein it's all about "entertainment", like what happened with the first live-action adaptation of the novel " entitled #TheGoldenCompass (a #movie.
I understand it is not easy to do an adaptation of written works, most especially a novel. After all, there are a lot of details an author can put in a novel that simply is not possible to fit in a 2-hour movie or a 12-episode season. I have no qualms about it; however, adapting a work and focusing on the entertainment value instead of the essence and message of the story, is a big no-no for me.
This is what the His Dark Materials TV adaptation did right as compared to The Golden Compass movie.
