Ode to the greatness of the human spirit
Yesterday I was able to attend a symphony concert again. I am lucky enough to live in the same city as the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra. A great privilege.

They saved my life. During the pandemic, when it was neither possible to play music nor to experience it live, I suffered from it like most others. When it was briefly possible to attend a symphony concert under certain conditions, I just did it. It was Shostakovich. I couldn't keep my mouth shut and jumped up afterwards.
Maybe because I had never heard anything like it before or maybe because I was so starved for it, but it blew me away. So much brutal power and depth. I felt the same as I did at a really, really good rock ‘n’ roll concert. You have to let yourself go with it, embrace the journey.
Yesterday, Prokofiev was, alongside Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Stravinsky, the absolute best in this métier. (Come on, racists, aren't you getting all tingly with so many non-Germanic names, right?) They played his 5th Symphony in B-flat major. Major is unusually positive for Prokofiev's symphonies. This work was written in 1944 at the end of the war and premiered in Moscow in 1945. It is said that the studio guns could still be heard during the concert. But it was clear that the Red Army had defeated the fascists.
That is why it is one of Prokofiev's most positive and optimistic works. He himself said: ‘I wanted [...] to sing of free and happy people, of their tremendous strength.’
