  1. I have been away from Mastodon for a while, not finding the time to be active here.

In any case here goes the final version of a paper on content and meaning in LLMs, co-authored with @raphaelmilliere. It lived a long preprint life, but is now published in an outstanding special issue of the journal Philosophy and the Mind Sciences.

The whole issue is worth checking out!

  6. Some good venting by Steve Klabnik about the sorry state of significant chunks of the AI debate today:

"What is breaking my brain a little bit is that all of the discussion online around AI is so incredibly polarized. This isn’t a “the middle is always right” sort of thing either, to be clear. It’s more that both the pro-AI and anti-AI sides are loudly proclaiming things that are pretty trivially verifiable as not true."

  7. A new, updated, streamlined, and generally improved version of The Vector Grounding Problem paper, joint work by @raphaelmilliere and me on the meaningfulness or else of LLM outputs and internal representations is now available on ArXiv.

    arxiv.org/abs/2304.01481

New abstract in the thread below.

  8. An updated and improved version of the paper briefly summarised in the thread above has now been published open access on Theoria:

  9. I’m curious who has made this argument in print. It’s effectively a claim that a simulation of #consciousness would lack the relevant causal profile. But what is the causal profile of consciousness that a functionally equivalent simulation (appropriately hooked up to the world) would lack? #PhilAI

  10. Call for postdoc applications!

We are looking for a 1-year postdoc to work on Philosophy of AI here in lovely Umeå.

Deadline for applications is May 26th.

More information about the fellowship and how to apply can be found here: umu.se/en/work-with-us/postdoc

  11. OpenAI’s so-called “reasoning” models generate more falsehoods than their predecessors. Since #LLMs are model language usage and not factual information, it’s built-into their design that they will output false or misleading information. #PhilAI techcrunch.com/2025/04/18/o...

  12. Next week teaching: van Gelder’s lovely 1995 paper in #philAI (and dynamical systems approach more generally). Bayes and Monty Hall in #philsci 2, and what characterizes #histsci relative to related fields in methods seminar. Yes, I know I’m buried with teaching this term. Helping out my colleagues

  13. Admissions are open for the second cohort of the Bachelor's in Philosophy and AI at Umeå University! (Only for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens)

A considerable part of the programme is in English, but several courses are in Swedish, so proficiency in a Scandinavian language is required.

  14. Great analysis of Othello-GPT and the search for 'world models' in LLMs by M. Mitchell:

    aiguide.substack.com/p/llms-an

    >...I think it’s likely that humans don’t have the same capacity as today’s LLMs to learn enormous numbers of specific rules... it’s actually our human limitations—constraints on working memory, on processing speed, on available energy—as well as our continually changing and complex environments, that require us to form more abstract and generalizable internal models.

  15. Had fun talking with my undergraduate students about the nature of intelligence, guided by @dcm’s excellent ‘Intelligent Behaviour’. #PhilMind #PhilAI

  16. After deciding to combine #philosophy of mind and AI in a single module AND reducing the number of lectures to one a week, we’re going through the material at quite a pace. Next week: phenomenal consciousness and bats! 🦇 #PhilMind #PhilAI

  17. Nice short essay by @melaniemitchell on the latest OpenAI models (o1 and o3) and their announced performance on some parts of the ARC benchmark.

    aiguide.substack.com/p/did-ope

Putting to one side all the issues with lack of transparency and thus of proper testing given the proprietary nature of these models, the key question, as she points out, is: " Is o3 ... actually solving these tasks using the kind of abstraction and reasoning the ARC benchmark was created to measure?"

  18. Next Tuesday I'll be presenting some work-in-progress of mine at the seminar series The Cognitive Science of Generative AI, organised by @UlrikeHahn

  24. This Friday at 12.15 CEST I'll be hosting a talk by computer scientist Kary Främling, in which he will present his work on Explainable AI techniques for producing explanations useful to a variety of stakeholders, rather than only to AI experts.

The talk is hybrid, so even if you are not currently enjoying the very colourful (and very wet) autumn in Umeå, you can join nonetheless!

  25. Great philosopher of cognitive science Nicholas Shea (also great PhD supervisor) has just published his second book, in open access, 'Concepts at the Interface'.

    Link to the book: academic.oup.com/book/58062

It is about concepts, their roles in thinking, the frame problem, among much more. Highly recommended!
