When the Philae lander detached from the Rosetta spacecraft in 2014 to perform the first-ever soft landing on a comet, its harpoons failed to fire. Instead of sticking to the surface, Philae bounced wildly across the comet's low-gravity landscape before finally wedging itself sideways into a dark, rocky crack.

Third, Facebook's 2014 summary video, also featuring the scene in the ESOC MCR when #Philae touched down on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 12 November that year. There is also a short animation showing the landing.
As with the Google video, this comes at the end of the sequence, underlining the event as one of the major global highlights of that year.

#OTD ten years ago, the end-of-2014 summaries from several of the big social media providers featured the history-making first landing on a comet by the ESA/DLR/CNES/ASI #Philae spacecraft, part of ESA's iconic #Rosetta mission.

🎂 Le 12 novembre 2014, #Philae devenait le premier objet à atterrir sur une comète. L’atterrissage ne s’étant pas complètement passé comme prévu, Philae avait malheureusement cessé d’émettre après 56 h de fonctionnement.

On 12 November 2014, after a ten-year journey through the Solar System and over 500 million kilometres from home, Rosetta’s lander Philae made space exploration history by touching down on a comet for the first time. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of this extraordinary feat, we celebrate by taking a look back over the mission's highlights.
Rosetta was an ESA mission with contributions from its Member States and NASA. It studied Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko for over two years, including delivering lander Philae to the comet’s surface. Philae was provided by a consortium led by DLR, MPS, CNES and ASI.

OTD in 2007 at 02:15 GMT, Rosetta passed just 250 km from the surface of Mars.
Rosetta’s Philae lander took this image 4 minutes before closest approach, at a distance of 1000 km. It captures one of Rosetta’s 14 m-long solar wings, set against the northern hemisphere of Mars, where details in the Mawrth Vallis region can be seen.

Today, 8 years ago, Philae landed on comet 67P. During that time I was part of the SESAME / DIM team (during my master studies in Göttingen, Germany). I did some lab work / calibration with the flight spare unit, data analysis and simulations.
Here you see happy 24-year-old me in the Philae lander center in Cologne. What a time!
