  2. Speziali or Pharmacies in Venice

During the Serenissima, Venice had many pharmacies, which were a notable part of the economy of the city. The most important product was theriac, which Venice exported both east and west for centuries.

These are some of the ancient pharmacies in Venice, some of which still exist today. The list is incomplete. It is simply the ones I have noticed during my reading.

Many monasteries, which also ran hospitals, had internal pharmacies, which sometime competed with the commercial shops.

Like most other shops, the speziali or pharmacists had an identifying shop sign outside. Venice in the time of the republic didn't have a system of house numbers, so an address was something like "At the Bridge of the Hatters, under the sign of the Ostrich."

The #EU needs an effective remedy to cure critical shortages and must tackle them at their roots, also as a matter of European strategic autonomy.”

I just published a comment by mizu where he refers to an interesting video from 1994: "maybe in the future #pharmacies and #bookstores will be the same since people will be so lazy to read the contents of a book that they will want to get the contents of the #books from something that they can digest easily, in the form of pills (or injections)."

"'They are not going to come back': The dark reality of SF's pharmacy crisis

    (. . .)

Over the past 10 years, at least 64 pharmacies have closed across the city, a sweeping trend that’s affecting all of the big chains. Walgreens, which used to have stores practically next door in some neighborhoods, now has only 29 locations in San Francisco, compared with about 53 stores in 2021. CVS has only 11 pharmacies throughout the city, or about half as many as it had in 2021. And last month, Rite Aid said it will likely shutter all of its California locations following a second bankruptcy filing. Driven by a range of factors, the crisis is also leaving independent neighborhood pharmacies struggling to stay afloat.

    (. . .)

'We’re really nearing a crisis point with pharmacy closures in California. I think that in San Francisco, what you see is a microcosm of what is happening across the state and frankly, the nation,' Susan Bonilla, CEO of the California Pharmacists Association, told SFGATE.

    (. . .)

San Francisco residents, especially older adults, are used to 'the idea of a nearby, walkable corner store pharmacy,' Jeffrey Wong, president of the Pharmacist Society of San Francisco, told SFGATE. Losing that accessibility and convenience can particularly impact underserved populations"

"These #keystonepharmacies —almost heroic in that if they were to go away, a neighborhood or neighborhoods would collapse into a dramatically underserved area—are really special cases," says Mathis. "Subsidizing them through grants or changing how they're reimbursed by insurance are a few options that could keep these essential #pharmacies running."
