I’m glad I squeezed in Sentimental Value as my last screening for #PFF34. Incredibly moving, incredible acting, impeccably directed.

I admire Mona Fastvold and Brady Corbet for looking at the reactions to The Brutalist epilogue and then making a movie-length version of that epilogue in The Testament of Ann Lee. #PFF34

The Secret Agent just ruined me. Absolute punch to the heart. It might hit different or even not at all if you don’t have a specific family (non)history, but it spoke to me very loudly. #PFF34

The last few minutes of Bi Gan's Resurrection were a surprise cry for me. I highly recommend watching this in a packed theater, if possible. #PFF34

How is a girl made safe for men? The death drive of young girls is passed from mothers to daughters to sisters over and over again in Mascha Schilinski’s Sound of Falling, which follows four generations in a German farmhouse. Watch this movie. Review @moviejawn.com later. #PFF34

Themes of my #PFF34 so far: child death and missing limbs.

Reflection in a Dead Diamond from Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani is a wild extravagant deconstruction of James Bond, Bond girls, and planned obsolescence. However, at 87 minutes, it still feels too long. Once the message is delivered, it’s repeated to death, refracting infinitely. #PFF34

Sirāt… astonishing. I need a month-long break from movies to sit with that. #PFF34

HAMNET’s function of entertainment as communal grieving follows its theme of the same. However, Zhao’s fixed viewpoints and verrrry slow pans, a maudlin muddy score, and overly explanatory dialogue detracted from the well-constructed narrative and Jessie Buckley’s face doing All That. #PFF34

Nadia Melliti and Park Ji-min are captivating leads in The Little Sister, a great little film from Hafsia Herzi about a young Algerian-French Muslim woman struggling to reconcile her faith and heritage with heartbreak and queerness, and also eating ass. More on @moviejawn.com later. #PFF34
