Picking the animated #Petrofuture UK series back up after all the distractions of the past couple of weeks. Here's Northwest England on a vintage Esso petrol station map.

These sorts of temperature anomalies we're seeing are virtually impossible without climate change, so thanks #Esso!

I did an installation of #Petrofuture maps at the Science After Dark event at the Pacific Science Center last night.

Details from the central London #Petrofuture map--66m sea level rise layered on top of a vintage #Esso gas station map.

All the land is underwater. The little islands are the buildings that poke above the sea level.

Usually I only model the landforms for the SLR maps. The issue with central London -- there were no landforms to show. It was all below 66m.

So this one is special. I used 1m lidar-derived data, and show any buildings that stick up above the sea level.

The Alaska #Petrofuture map has been challenging. Getting all those little islands to align with modern elevation data has been a complete PITA.

But worth it! I love the way this one turned out.

In a world of disturbing climate news, every now and then something stands out. This is utterly terrifying, a feed forward loop involving microorganisms that seems pretty robust (in a bad way) and will accelerate the melting of Greenland's ice. I think we're already on track for 30cm of rise by end of century and the full thing is good for 7.4m (24 feet). Well on our way to #petrofuture @ConspiracyOfCartographers
