No surprise. It fits #sentencing guidelines for a major theft and deep betrayal of trust by a very senior person.
This is a serious crime, but it's a non-violent crime. #Prison brutalises people, and destroys lives.
Non-violent crimes should get non-violent sentences. Why not say 1,000 hours of community service instead of each year in prison?

By my calculations, #PeterMurrell’s embezzling of £12,000 as klepto party treasurer to the #ScottishNationalParty — being over a period of 12 years — constitutes a 3.645 *millitrump* fraud.
Good to see justice functions here in the UK; he’s been caught and will be held to account, along with any *partner* in crime that might be proven at a later date.

I was particularly struck by his comments on the tackiness of some of #Murrell's purchases. Even in Scotland, British class sensibilities problematise such spending from every angle.
I think of a late friend's Scots uber-aristo granny reportedly speaking in the 1950s of "the middle classes — the sort of people who own fish knives".

A small group of outsiders had rapidly moved to centre-stage at the head of a vastly bigger group, with much more power & resources.The personal trust+loyalty that had got them there was no longer sufficient for good administration, but old habits and loyalties were entrenched.
The #GPEW needs to learn from this.

But the evidence now remains private. That's unhelpful for #SNP members .
The SNP needs an independent report on how the £600,000 was not ringfenced as promised, and how the motorhome purchase was not spotted. Members need to know why basic oversight failed on big ticket items, and what's the fix.
