  1. PETER MURPHY
    Cascade
    2021 UK 2xLP reissue
    Scarlet vinyl

I’m a huge fan of Peter Murphy’s solo albums, and to be honest, I love them WAY more than any Bauhaus album. I even prefer Dali’s Car to Bauhaus.

I was overjoyed when they reissued all of these, in particular THIS and Holy Smoke (my two favorites).

Cascade is a much more electronic-tinged and atmospheric effort than previous ones. The songs are very melodic with some ambient flourishes, loops, keyboards, and VERY well produced.

“I’ll Fall With Your Knife” is a GREAT song, as is “Wild Birds Flock To Me”, and the record on whole is quite refined.

Not hardcore Murphy fans’ favorite, but definitely a favorite of mine.

  3. PETER MURPHY
    Holy Smoke
    2021 Europe reissue
    “Smoke” vinyl

This was an album I first heard out of needing to pick a random title from one of those Columbia House/BMG music clubs as a kid.

“16 Tapes For A Penny” sounded like a good deal.
It was a deal I took disgusting advantage of MANY times as a kid, using multiple mailing addresses and aliases, AND never buying a single thing after that.

Sometimes, i just picked a random thing I’d never heard of to help round out the list, and Holy Smoke was one of those.

I had never heard of Murphy at that point (or Bauhaus for that matter), but I remember instantly liking this album. Particularly “The Sweetest Drop” and “Let Me Love You”.

Great memories of this record, and it still sounds great to me.

  4. Peter Murphy And Boy George Release A New Remix Of Collaborative Song “Let The Flowers Grow (Delerium Remix)”

Legendary artists Peter Murphy and Boy George joined forces in late 2024 for the release of the gorgeous orchestral single ‘Let The Flowers Grow’. Produced by Youth (Pink Floyd, Killing Joke, The Orb, Paul McCartney, etc), it saw both singers deliver a powerful message of acceptance and hope. Its initial premise about George’s personal acceptance of being gay took a more expansive and universal scope as the song developed, its lyrics extending beyond sexuality and embracing race, gender, creed and religion.

A remix of ‘Let The Flowers Grow’ by the Vancouver, Canada based Delerium is available from today. Well known as the electro-industrial duo of Front Line Assembly’s Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber in ambient-techno guise, they have provided a regally refined treatment of a song that they describe as “a soulful journey of endearing sentiments where poetry and music collide.” It provides a neat contrast to an intensely epic psytrance workout by Ben Watkins of Juno Reactor that was issued in late 2025 STREAM | BANDCAMP.

The original version of the song proved so popular with fans that it was added to Murphy’s acclaimed 2025 album ‘Silver Shade’ as a bonus track. Voted the no. 2 Album of the Year by Vive Le Rock magazine in the UK, ‘Silver Shade’ is available to stream HERE and can be purchased via Bandcamp HERE.

  5. Goth Icons Remixed: Peter Murphy And Boy George Single Gets Epic Electronic Rework

The gorgeous orchestral single ‘Let The Flowers Grow’ by Peter Murphy and Boy George has received a new remix from the Brighton-based group Juno Reactor. The original, produced by Youth, delivered a powerful message of acceptance and hope. Juno Reactor’s remix, typical of founder Ben Watkins’ style, fuses electronic, global, and orchestral symphonic styles, giving the goth/new wave track an epic quality. The original single was so popular it was added as a bonus track to Murphy’s acclaimed album Silver Shade.

  6. Bauhaus, 4AD, 1983 on 4AD

Yes, I did save this one for halloween. This was a compilation EP of the singles versions of “Dark Entries,” “Telegram Sam,” and “Terror Couple Kill Colonel.” Love that back cover photo.

I was today years old when I realized that John Cale wrote “Rosegarden Funeral of Sores,” the opening triplet of which is burned into my adolescent brain so much it still comes up whenever I am tired of dealing with people:

Virgin Mary was tired so tired / Tired of listening to gossip / Gossip and complaints

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a UK pressing with a white b-side label, pressed by Damont. I don’t believe this was ever issued in the US.

  7. Bauhaus, Mask, 1981 on Beggars Banquet

Second studio album from Bauhaus and their first on Beggars Banquet (In The Flat Field was on 4AD), with a cover drawn by Daniel Ash, across a gatefold and on the labels.

The first five Bauhaus records are are perfect – as is the singles collection 1979-1983 and most of the bands that followed in the Bauhaus diaspora (Dali’s Car, Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail).

My copy—via A1 Records in NYC—is the 2023 reissue pressed at GZ Media.

  8. Bauhaus, In The Flat Field, 1980 on 4AD

Debut album from Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, David Jay, and Kevin Haskins aka Bauhaus. Bauhaus and its many spinoffs (Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, Dali’s Car) are among my favorite musical lineages.

They’d released “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” as a single in 1979 on Small Wonder records, but this debut came out on 4AD which itself was new in 1980 under the Beggars Banquet umbrella.

The cover is a photograph called Homage to Purvis de Chavannes by American photographer Duane Michals – hopefully it doesn’t get my account flagged as naughty.

My copy – as so many in the last few weeks via Slipped Disc at a Mill No 5 record fair – is a 2013 reissue.

  12. PETER MURPHY releases critically-hailed “Silver Shade” today!

Post-punk’s quintessential icon PETER MURPHY has delivered SILVER SHADE, his universally-hailed latest album, which is released today, May 9, 2025 via Metropolis Records on 2xLP, CD and digitally. Majestic and ornate, his tenth studio album was produced by YOUTH (Pink Floyd, Killing Joke, The Orb, Paul McCartney “The Firemen,” Faith No More, Alien Sex Fiend, Siouxsie and the Banshees) at Youth’s studio in Spain and is the second album that the pair have worked on together since 2014’s Lion. A symbiotic relationship born of artistic collaboration, Silver Shade is, as he recently attested, “as powerful as any of my work to date.”

Hailed on both sides of the Atlantic as one of his finest albums to date, Silver Shade has been revered as “a deliciously bubbling cauldron seasoned with ladles of Scott Walker melodrama and a generous pinch of Bowie-inspired balladry” (UNCUT) and “all high drama, dark figures and wild impulses. Hugely entertaining, and when Murphy sings ‘this is the meaning of my life’, you don’t doubt it for a second” (MOJO). In the U.S., GOLDMINE says in their current cover story, that “there are musical elements that Silver Shade owns that are unadulteratedly indisputable: Every song is unique yet extremely cohesive to one body of work, and there is something to be revered by every era of Peter Murphy fan. The artist’s vocal performance here is just as magnificent as it was 45 years ago … maybe even better.” SPIN adds, “Silver Shade is what we can all hope to be at 67: imperfect, maybe expected, but also loud, lively, and unapologetically ourselves. By embracing an outlook only earned by age, Peter Murphy is still finding new shades four decades into his illustrious career.”

Having issued “Let The Flowers Grow” (a surprise duet with Boy George) as a standalone single in late 2024 (it is included as a bonus track), Murphy continued with the majestic synth-punk/funk hybrid “Swoon” (featuring Trent Reznor) and the stridently epic “The Artroom Wonder” (featuring Justin Chancellor of Tool).

The album’s title song features another guest vocal contribution from Reznor, while Danny Carey of Tool plays drums. “’Silver Shade’ captures the stillness after the storm; haunted, reflective and raw,” explains Murphy. “It is about a King letting go of his slaves. It’s not about nostalgia or reinvention, but quiet reckoning.”

Peter Murphy’s solo career began in 1986 with the release of Should The World Fail To Fall Apart and continues to this day. His nine previous albums have spawned such decisive singles as “All Night Long,” “Indigo Eyes,” “Cuts You Up,” “Strange Kind of Love,” “The Scarlet Thing In You,” “Seesaw Sway,” and “I Am My Own Name.”

First emerging from the British punk and rock underground in the late ‘70s, Murphy (along with bandmates Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins) fronted the groundbreaking iconic rock band Bauhaus which spawned four iconoclastic and ultra-seminal albums as well as keystone singles “She’s In Parties,” “Dark Entries,” “The Passion of Lovers,” “Silent Hedges,” and, of course, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” before disbanding in 1983 with a handful of reunions since then.

SILVER SHADE is released today, May 9, 2025 via Metropolis Records.
