"In two years, a committee will determine if [Pete Rose] should be on a ballot, and if so, 16 men and women will vote on his candidacy." I'm curious to know how committee members will vote and what their reasoning will be. #sport #sports #PeteRose

I forgot to mention that Christopher Russo probably exploded a few capillaries in a day-long rant about MLB's treatment of Pete Rose.
"Everywhere you look in Cooperstown, it's Pete Rose! It's a freaking shrine to Pete Rose! The only thing that's missing is a plaque! Every record he set, they sent the bat, the ball, to Cooperstown!" - made-up sample for illustrative purposes only.
He was spitting fire against MLB. Hit on my favorite re Barry Bonds - no owner ever banned them from showing up at their ballpark to fill the thing and make tons of money for the owners.
My late father's law partner became president of the California Bar Assn., and the annual audits were time-consuming when dear old dad was handling both of their cases, so they merged into another firm. That firm has as a partner Allen Ruby, Barry Bonds' attorney.
The then-called legal secretaries had a pecking order for who did the most work for the firm. Allen had over 3 filing cabinets full of open cases. He won.
So, in addition to being a huge Barry Bonds fan, I might have a minor bias in favor of athletes over league management.
"Now, everywhere you look, it's Draft Kings and what's the other one? They post the odds with the games! He bet on his own team to win!"
Pete was a jerk. Barry was a jerk to media. There are far worse people enshrined in Cooperstown who were never banned from baseball.
Remember when the now extremely pro-gambling MLB banned Mickey freaking Mantle because he was spokesperson for a casino?
It was a glorious rant.

Best thing I've read about #PeteRose so far, by #JoePosnanski: "Every single time i speak somewhere people will ask me, “Do you think Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame?” I respond by asking the crowd, “By a show of hands, how many of you think Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame?’
Always, and I do mean every single time, half the hands in the room go up. Exactly half." #mlb #baseball #hof #baseballhalloffame https://www.joeposnanski.com/p/instant-reaction-baseball-s-ban-on-rose-is-over-96e8

I’m glad #PeteRose wasn’t reinstated before he died. Now his probable #HallOfFame election can be for his (surviving) fans.
The hall is still a joke without #RogerClemens and #BarryBonds, though.

Pete Rose and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson — longstanding pariahs in MLB due to their involvement with gambling on the sport — have been removed from MLB's permanently ineligible list. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2025/05/14/baseball/mlb/rose-jackson-mlb-ban-list/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #baseball #mlb #robmanfred #peterose #shoelessjoejackson #gambling #us

Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson restored to eligibility for Baseball Hall of Fame.
"it is hard to conceive of a penalty that has more deterrent effect than one that lasts a lifetime with no reprieve."
Seems reasonable.
Time to watch Field of Dreams again... wait, I just did that. 😂 Must have felt it coming! ⚾️

Cooperstown's not having it.
President Trump says he will pardon baseball legend Pete Rose ⚾
John Dowd, who investigated Rose for MLB in 1989 and served as Trump's lawyer seven years ago, noted that MLB is "not in the pardon business nor does it control admission to the HOF."

> Gambling can develop into an addiction like smoking, where you itch without the (figurative or literal) dice in your hands.
> This matters now because the same sports world that banned Rose, with the haughty air of a pope excommunicating an inveterate sinner, is now besotted with gambling. Our smartphones are now portable sportsbooks, and the leagues have reaped billions from the industry.

Yes, I am sad that Pete Rose passed away. He was a legend and he was a great. I first remember him when he played in the 1980 World Series with the Phillies. When I was 11-12 years old I played on a Little League team called the Reds, and Rose earned his legendary status playing for the Cincinnati Reds. All of that. More hits than any player in history. Legend.
He also bet on baseball games. He claims he never threw a game and he only bet on his own team. He was banned from Major League Baseball for life and good riddance. He always came off to me as if he were an insufferable prick and I had no problem with the ban. No Hall of Fame for Charlie Hustle, even though he does hold the MLB record for hits.
Now that he’s passed, and it is sad that he’s passed for sure, the conversation is going to happen again. Should his ban be lifted and should he be allowed into the Hall of Fame.
I say no. As long as Shoeless Joe Jackson remains banned for betting on baseball, specifically as a member of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox team that threw the World Series (against the Cincinnati Reds, of course) then Pete Rose remains banned too. Rose was a brilliant player but by all accounts he wasn’t even close to as good as Jackson (who was a .400 hitter one season). Who knows what Joe could have accomplished if he’d been allowed to play out his full career. There is also very little evidence of him actually participating in rigging games. Hell, he had a great series in 1919 when his co-conspirators were clearly tanking.
If they lift the ban on Joe Jackson then we can talk about lifting the ban on Pete Rose. Before then? I don’t give a shit what anyone says about Rose. If Jackson remains out then Rose remains out. That’s how it needs to be.
I have spoken.

Somewhat nauseated at the hagiography going on around #PeteRose. You can argue he was unduly banned for engaging in behavior #MLB would one day use as a primary source of revenue, but he was also a predator.
And he admitted as much.
And he was unrepentant.
Barry Bonds wasn't a “bad guy," he just broke the rules and you can decide for yourself if its fair for him to be punished. Rose broke the rules AND was a bad guy.
No sympathy required.
