@confuseacat @ovid On the surface, because “of Perl’s lack of long term viability, and high cost of hiring Perl developers.” Honestly, I think our PE ownership thinks they can sell us for more if we rewrite, and I think the CTO must get a better bonus if we’re done when that happens. #pessimist

The optimist says the glass is half-full.
The pessimist says the glass is half-empty.
The engineer says the glass is sub-optimally specified for the application.
(An oldie-but-a-goodie that not everyone has heard...)

Love the redundancy here. I suspect in the UK a visionary exec had those extra generators repurposed for short term profit, paid out a huge dividend, moved on to a new job, the government has to buy it back, and then there's meltdown and decades of damage in a blackout.

innocence (n.) : a state of permanent optimism, such as believing that when UPS says a package will be delivered between 8am and noon, it will actually be delivered that day, or that when a company announces a change "to serve you better", that they actually intend to try to serve you better.

On a more positive note, I'm getting a lot more opportunities to use my "In short, everything is terrible" catch-phrase.

@alextecplayz @captainrob I’m a massive #pessimist that #TechRegulation will happen anytime soon. In the meantime, we need to #federate and #decentralize as much as possible
starve them of their MAUs. Do not allow them to continue to #DrinkYourMilkshake
It’s the only way to bring them to the table to negotiate regulation

it's hard to be a #pessimist in this world, people believes one wishes something bad... when in reality we want to prepare for the worst case scenario

Speaking as one who has continually run his own mail servers for 25 years, I would say that guide should be short and clear:
"#Nope."
Gmail, Yahoo, and whatever MS wants to call its mail services this week make it a never-ending clown show of trying to diagnose mail deliverability issues with zero feedback and zero support options for the mail admins affected. And they're the 900lb gorillas of email, so everyone has to dance to whatever tune they choose to call.

The TDG Naysayers
In 1688, the aftermath of the English civil war produced a better functioning parliament. The naysayers said that would not work.
In 1789, the US Constitution came into being. The naysayers said that would not work.
Post WW2, Europeans built new democracies. The naysayers said that would not work.
It is time for a new democracy. The naysayers say this new way will not work.

@GrahamDowns After all these years, I just have trust issues. Is this actually true, or are they just making stuff up? And... if it is true, then why only now? Why wait for over a decade to just suddenly, and with so little apparent fuss, fix it? Why wait for an election year where the polls are looking bad?
And will the story change on 30 May?
Will the sabotage suddenly start again a week before election day? Or the day after if the wrong party wins?
*sigh*
I want to believe. But it's been too long. The absolute best and most optimistic case I can wrap my head around is that they are telling the truth, and that loadshedding really does go away for possibly even months at a time. But without election pressure, it will stop being a priority and the same old forces of corruption and vested interests will come back into play and we'll have loadshedding again in 2025.

I must admit that I’ve spent much of this season thinking Dundee United simply weren’t good enough to witn the Championship. What a relief to be proved wrong, although they made heavy weather of it again yesterday. It’s not technically won, but even I can’t see us losing a 36 goal dvantage over 2 matches, so we’ll be back in the top league next season. Mind you, without some good recruitment, we’ll be straight back down again. A lot of the squad aren’t good enough for the Premiership.

Bild aus: https://algorithmwatch.org/en/image-generators-stereotypes-diversity/ zu "A presidential candidate is giving a speech in the street."

CW: BEES
The Internet: Look at these bees that survived for 50 days trapped under volcanic ash!! 🐝🐝🐝
My Brain, without skipping a beat: Don't most honeybees only live a few weeks? Imagine being part of the bee generation that still remembers The Before Times, living the rest of their lives trapped in uncertainty before eventually dying in the dark, never knowing that things would get better.
Apparently I have a gift for seeing the negative in everything. 🫠

[Part 1]
Real #shortstory time.
I'm generally known as not-very-positive at best and a bitter #pessimist at worst, especially toward fellow humans.
Today, I dressed with a jacket with shallow pockets, and I put my wallet in one.
At the #fleamarket, while I was kneeling to put a book I just bought inside my backpack, the wallet fell out and I did not notice. Not much money in there, but losing all the documents would have caused an headache a few weeks long.

"There are two things which make it impossible to believe that this world is the successful work of an all-wise, all-good, and, at the same time, all-powerful Being; firstly, the misery which abounds in it everywhere; and secondly, the obvious imperfection of its highest product, man, who is a burlesque of what he should be."
―Arthur Schopenhauer

People are always giving me grief for being so negative (I promise this isn’t another Covid post).
Last month, I applied for a job. A promotion, even.
Last week, the hiring manager said something that made me think I was out of the running. People keep telling me not to be so negative. It’s not over until it’s over. Blah blah blah.
And I’m all … bollocks. How dare you. Please don’t get my hopes up. I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed.
