#Permaculture... And why #Maine is perfect for it
By Topher Belknap, November 2018
"THE TERM PERMACULTURE was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970s, but the concepts it embodies have been around for much longer. According to Holmgren, permaculture is, 'Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fiber and energy for provision of local needs.'
Permaculture design: a primer
"Permaculture is a form of landscape design intended to generate food for humans while simultaneously regenerating our soil and land. It aims to create environments that meet our needs in sustainable ways; repair damage to ecosystems; and maintain and return wild spaces. Or, as I like to say, 'Permaculture is farming with your head, your heart and ... trees.'
"With respect to ecosystem repair, there are several things we can easily do that nature struggles to accomplish—such as moving nutrients uphill; moving nutrients from the ocean back to land; slowing water on steep slopes; and planting trees appropriate to the changing climate. All these things can be done by people with just a small amount of planning and effort.
"Systems that mimic nature are more sustainable, whereas human-created systems tend to be linear in their design, consuming resources and creating unusable waste. Natural systems maintain a closed loop, where waste from one element becomes input for another element. Nothing is depleted, and nothing accumulates into pollution.
"In permaculture, before introducing a new element to the design it is important to consider what that element adds and what it takes away or consumes in relation to the other elements in the system.
"Chickens, for example, need food, but if you already have a surplus of grain and ticks, their food is provided in the system. They need a place to scratch, but if you have patches of land that need cleaning up, they will do the work for you. They produce manure, but if you have a garden, it needs the fertilizer. They produce eggs, but if you already have bacon... well then, you’ve got breakfast!"

A food forest, like the name implies, is a forest of food. Like any forest, once established they maintain themselves and have to be physically removed to stop producing. They are created in layers and this open source guide talks about plants ideal for creating the root crops layer. https://www.onecommunityglobal.org/food-forest-root-crop-plantings/

THINKING ABOUT PERMACULTURE…
It was when I was looking for a book on the shelf that a couple other titles caught my eye. I never did find that elusive book I was looking for, however the sight of those other titles made me realise that the saying that new ideas stand on the shoulders of those that came before was as true for the permaculture design system as much as it was for any other innovative idea.Bill Mollison and David Holmgren knew this because they described permaculture as a synthesis drawing on a range of sciences and traditional practices. Perhaps this makes permaculture more of an iteration of those things it drew upon rather than a new invention. What was new was how they were synthesised to create a comprehensive and coherent system of design, so maybe we can say that permaculture was assembled from ideas, sciences and practices that were aleady in existence and that Bill and David brought together.
Anyway, following up on my noticing those books on the shelf I did my own assembly by bringing together some of the thinkers who were an influence on the early years of permaculture, those increasingly distant days when the design system was still in formulation. Maybe you know of others. If so, let's know in the comments.

Managing Snow Accumulation in Cold Climate #Permaculture Designs
By Perma
December 21, 2024"As the frost starts and snow falls, I think back to my childhood winters. I remember wearing layers, playing in the snow, and building snow forts. These memories remind me of winter’s beauty and wonder.
"But for those of us in permaculture, snow brings both challenges and opportunities. How can we use winter to help our #gardens and #ecosystems grow?
"In this article, we’ll look at how to manage snow in permaculture. We’ll explore how to work with nature to create systems that grow all year. We’ll discuss the role of snow, designing #microclimates, and removing snow sustainably.
"These strategies will help you succeed in even the snowiest places. Let’s learn how to make winter a source of life and growth."

PERMACULTURE IDEAS FOR THE ANTHROPOCENE…
Could there ever be such a thing as bioregional agroforestry—a tree cropping systems producing food and useful materials that also has space for indigenous plant species and that is
adapted to regional climate and terrain?Peter Hardwick thought so. I came across Peter’s idea while on a course at Robin Francis’ Djanbung Gardens permaculture education centre in Nimbin some years ago.
This is a brief introduction to Peter’s idea as it stood at the time. Let’s know what you think of his model and how you would adapt it to the region you call home.
