  2. Creativity and personality in classical, jazz and folk musicians

    Before you read:
-Creativity and personality of classical, jazz, and folk musicians was compared.
-Jazz musicians show higher divergent thinking ability.
-Jazz musicians accomplish more creative musical activities and achievements.
-Classical musicians show a high amount of practice and win more competitions.
-Folk musicians are more extraverted and publish more musical productions.

This study examines whether jazz musicians differ in creativity and personality from musicians of other music genres, specifically classical and folk music. The researchers compared students of these three music genres in terms of their musical activities, psychometric creativity, and different aspects of personality. The results showed that jazz musicians are more frequently engaged in extracurricular musical activities and have completed more creative musical achievements. They also scored higher on measures of ideational creativity, as assessed through divergent thinking tasks. Additionally, jazz musicians tended to be more open to new experiences than classical musicians. These findings suggest that jazz musicians show higher levels of creativity, both in terms of domain-specific musical accomplishments and domain-general indicators of divergent thinking ability, that may be relevant for musical improvisation. The authors discuss these results in the context of differences in formal and informal learning approaches between music genres.

Jazz is often seen as a particularly creative musical discipline due to its focus on improvisation. However, little is known about the differences between musicians who specialize in different genres, such as jazz, classical, and folk. This study aims to compare jazz musicians with those who specialize in classical and folk music in terms of their musical activities, creativity, and personality. Previous research has shown that classical musicians tend to learn through formal education and solo practice, while non-classical musicians are more likely to engage in extracurricular activities such as playing with others or discussing music professionally. Classical musicians also place a greater emphasis on technical proficiency, while non-classical musicians prioritize skills like memorization and improvisation. Jazz musicians have been found to have higher levels of intrinsic motivation and enjoyment in their musical activities compared to classical musicians, but classical musicians experience more performance anxiety than other non-classical musicians. Factors like practice hours and divergent thinking ability (the ability to generate original and appropriate ideas) have been shown to predict improvisational creativity in jazz musicians. Personality and motivation may also play a role in creative thinking in music. This study aims to further explore these differences and the potential impacts on expert performance in music and improvisation.
